Notables-Eighth straight win over the Bulldogs-UMD is now coached by former Saint Jessica Rich
DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team opened its season late Friday night with a 7-2 victory over the University of Minnesota-Duluth at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
Doubles:The No. 2 doubles team of
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) and
Daniela Rojas (Monterrey, Mexico /Universidad Tecmilenio) got the Saints off to a good start with an 8-3 victory. After the Bulldogs evened the match at No. 1 doubles, the No. 3 team of
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) and
Kelly Neil (Mora, Minn. /Mora HS) gave CSS a 2-1 edge entering singles play with an 8-6 victory.
Singles:Coryell then cruised in her match at the No. 5 spot, blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0.
Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) gave the Saints a 4-1 match lead with a win at the No. 6 flight 6-4, 6-1.
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) sealed the dual match victory for St. Scholastica at the No. 1 spot, winning in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) (No. 2) and Rojas (No. 3) would also win their singles matches, but needed a third-set super-breaker to do so. Solberg won by scores of 6-3, 3-6, (11-9), while Rojas won 7-6, 5-7, (10-8).
Up Next:The Saints will be in action again tomorrow when they open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play against North Central University at the Bloomington Lifetime Fitness. Action begins at 4 p.m.
