DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team took both games on Thursday afternoon in its conference doubleheader against Northland University. The Saints took the first game 13-4 and the second game at Kenwood Field.
Game 1: CSS 13, Northland 4
The Saints wasted no time in the first game, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. Following an Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) single and a Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) walk, Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) doubled down the left field line, advancing to third on a throwing error by the shortstop to open up a 2-0 lead. Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) promptly knocked in Logergren with a single, and scored on an error following a single by Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) to cap off a four run first for CSS.
St. Scholastica quickly blew the game open in the second inning, scoring another six runs. Schiro started the hit parade with a single, quickly coming home after McGuiness doubled to left. Logergren then knocked in McGuiness with a single to give CSS a commanding 6-0 lead. After McCabe walked, Marjaana Dailey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) singled through the left side to load the bases. Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) stepped up to the plate and doubled to left, scoring two to push the lead to 8-0. Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) then capped off the inning with another double to put the Saints up 10-0.
After the LumberJills put up a pair of unearned runs in the third, the Saints would score two to keep the 10-run advantage. After a pair of early singles, Logergren singled to drive in her fourth run of the game to make the score 11-2 in favor of CSS. She was then caught stealing second, which allowed a run to score from third to put the score at 12-2. Some sloppy play in the fourth would allow Northland would score two unearned runs and allow CSS to tack on one more to put the final score at 13-4 in favor of the Saints.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) picked up another win for CSS, her 15th of the season, as Northland was only able to score four unearned runs in the contest. Crystal Diaz picked up the loss for the 'Jills.
Game 2: CSS 9, Northland 1
Unlike the first contest, it was Northland who took the early lead as a pair of singles and some small-ball allowed the 'Jills to take a quick 1-0 lead. St. Scholastica quickly responded as Schiro hit a homer to lead off the bottom of the first, but the score remained tied 1-1 after one, as CSS was unable to muster anything else in the first
The Saints would take the lead for good in the second, scoring four runs. Just as in the first, CSS started the inning with a homer, this time by Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS). Following a walk and a single, Schiro doubled to bring in a run and put runners on second and third with one out. An error and a wild pitch would allow both of those runs to come home and give the Saints a 5-1 lead.
CSS would score again in the third as Becca Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) knocked in Johnson, who had doubled previously. The Saints scored another two runs in the fourth on singles by Molly Jazdzwski and Johnson to give CSS a 8-1 lead, and McGuiness would finish the game with an RBI single in the fifth to give CSS a 9-1 victory.
Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) picked up the win for the Saints, throwing five innings and allowing just one run. Heidi Guenther took the loss for the 'Jills, allowing nine runs on twelve hits.
CSS (25-10, 19-0 UMAC) looks to remain perfect in UMAC play as the Saints head down to face University of North Central on Saturday at 1 p.m.
