EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (cssaints.com) – St. Scholastica women's tennis split its two matches on Sunday losing the opening contest 9-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and then winning the second match 9-0 over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
UW-Eau Claire 9, CSS 0 The Blugolds took the No. 1 doubles match by a score 8-1 over
Daniela Rojas (Monterrey, Mexico /Universidad Tecmilenio) and
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College). The Saints No. 2 doubles team of
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Miki Samz (Savage, Minn. /Burnsville HS) were also defeated 8-4 and then UWEC completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles match.
Eau Claire was also perfect in singles competition winning all six matches.
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) brought the No. 1 singles match to a super-breaker for St. Scholastica but was defeated 6-1, 1-6, (10-4). The Saints also took the No. 2 singles flight to a super-breaker but Scanlan fell just short losing 7-6, 5-7, (10-8). CSS couldn't find a way to win in the other four singles matches against the Blugolds losing each in straight sets.
CSS 9, UW-River Falls 0 The Saints found much more success against River Falls winning all three doubles matches. St. Scholastica's No. 2 pair of Gunderson and Samz won their match in a super-breaker 9-8 (7-4).
CSS won all six singles matches in straight sets against the Falcons. Gunderson won the No. 1 flight 6-0, 6-4 and Scanlan followed that up with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles Rojas earned a win 6-0, 6-3, (No. 4)
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) won 6-0, 6-2, (No. 5) Samz won 6-1, 6-0, and (No. 6)
Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won 6-0, 6-3.
The Saints will next play Bethany Lutheran College on Friday at the Arrowhead Tennis and Athletic Center in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contest. The match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
