Notables-CSS has won eight straight vs. Saint Ambrose-Nystrom improves to 3-0 in singles action this season
ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team began its spring break with a 7-2 victory over NAIA's Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) Sunday morning.
CSS swept the doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the match. The No. 1 team of
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) and
Daniela Rojas (Monterrey, Mexico /Universidad Tecmilenio) won 8-4. The No. 2 team of
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) came out on top 8-1. Finally, the No. 3 tandem of
Olivia Bretting (Ashland, Wis. /Ashland HS ) and
Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won 9-7.
The six singles matches featured three matches that went to third set super-breakers, two of which won by the Saints. Brascugli (No. 4) won the closest match by scores of 6-3, 5-7, (13-11).
Halle Nystrom (Fargo, N.D. /Fargo North HS) (No. 5) won the other super-breaker, coming back from a set down to win 0-6, 6-4, (10-4).
Scanlan (No. 2) won 6-3, 6-1 and the final singles winner was
Miki Samz (Savage, Minn. /Burnsville HS) (No. 3) by scores of 6-2, 7-5.
The Saints (6-2) will face Saint Mary's College (Ind.) tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. (ET).
