Softball Downs Morris to Advance to Title Game

Box Score DULUTH, Minn.  (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team defeated the University of Minnesota Morris 5-3 on Saturday in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament to advance to Sunday's championship game.
 
The Saints extend their home winning streak to 25 games dating back to the 2011 season. The last team to beat CSS at home was Northland College, who will face the Saints again for the UMAC Tournament championship tomorrow. The LumberJills defeated the University of Northwestern 11-2 in the first elimination game of the day and then eliminated Minnesota Morris 8-0 to end Saturday.
 
Against the Saints, the Cougars jumped ahead and scored a run in the top of the first on a two-out single. After Morris held the Saints scoreless through the first two innings, Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) opened the CSS offense with a three-run home run, putting the Saints up 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
 
The Saints scored again in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS), plating Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS).
 
In the bottom of the fifth, the Saints scored their fifth and final run of the game when Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) hit a double to left field driving Warren in.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Cougars had runners on second and third with two outs when catcher Molly Olson hit a single to center field scoring two runs. With the tying run at the plate, the Saints got a groundout to end the game 5-3.
 
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) pitched a complete game with one walk, and three strikeouts to earn the win. Warren went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. She also walked twice. McCabe and Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) also had a pair of hits for the Saints.
 
The Saints (26-10) and LumberJills will battle for the title at noon Sunday at Kenwood Field. If Northland, wins that game a second championship game will be played at 2 p.m. The winner receives the conference's automatic qualifier into next week's NCAA Division III Tournament.
