Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team broke the program record for home runs in a season with 35, as they opened up the UMAC Tournament with a win over the Northland College LumberJills by a score of 11-2 in five innings.

The Saints got the scoring going right away in the first inning. After Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) reached base on a fielding error by Northland, Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) doubled to right center to bring in Warren from second base. The next batter, Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS), would nail a home run to center field to put the Saints up 3-0 after the first.

After a scoreless second inning, the Saints offense started rolling again. Warren started it off with a walk that was followed by another Logergren double to right center. Jazdzewski then drove Warren in to score on an RBI single to left field. Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) would then load the bases on a fielder's choice. Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) drew a walk in the next at-bat to score Logergren and Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) hit a sacrifice fly RBI to right field to score Jazdzewski and double the Saints' lead to 6-0.

Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) would start the fourth inning with a solo home run to left center to put CSS up 7-0. Later on in the inning with Jazdzewski at first and Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) at third, Jazdzewski would attempt a stolen base and created time for Schiro to score and extend the lead to 8-0.

Northland got a couple runs back in the fifth inning to stay alive. With the bases loaded and one out, Erin Gilligan forced a walk to give the LumberJills their first run of the game. Kaitlyn Witthun would then reach on a fielder's choice and a runner from third would be thrown out at home, but after the out was made the Saints would attempt the get the double play at first but failed, thus allowing another Northland player to come in to score to give Northland their second and last run of the game.

McCabe would get the bottom of the fifth started with a single through the left side. Mizera would follow that up with another single. Then with two outs and two runners on base, Hudack would end the game on a walk-off three-run home run to give the Saints the 11-2 win.

Mizera got the win for the Saints, pitching all five innings while giving up two hits and striking out 10 Northland batter.

The Saints will take on Minnesota-Morris tomorrow in the UMAC Tournament Semifinals after Morris defeated Northwestern by a score of 4-3. That game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at Kenwood Field.
