Box Score 2 VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team added two more conference wins to its record Sunday after victories over Martin Luther College and the University of Minnesota Morris at the Vadnais Heights Sports Center.
CSS 10, Martin Luther 5 St. Scholastica began the day by scoring four runs in the top of the first against Martin Luther on its way to a 10-5 victory.
In the top of the first,
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) hit a double, which scored
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) from third base.
After two outs were made,
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) hit a home run over the right center field fence to add three more runs for the Saints. Martin Luther responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.
The Saints continued their scoring streak by adding on another run in the top of the second.
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) hit a double to left field, which scored Hudack.
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) hit a solo home run in the third inning to make it 6-2. Neither team scored again until the top of the sixth inning when the Saints added to their lead with RBIs by Jazdzewski and
Becca Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) to make it 8-2.
In the top of the seventh, freshman
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) hit a deep home run to left field to add one more run and Johnson added another RBI double. The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 10-5.
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts. Johnson was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Logergren was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
CSS 10, Minnesota Morris 6 The Saints rallied back from a 3-0 and a 5-2 deficit to win 10-6 against Minnesota Morris in the final game of the crossover.
Morris jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the second. The Saints didn't respond until
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) hit a two-run home run that hit the ceiling, but was ruled a round-tripper by the umpires in the bottom of the third.
The Cougars responded with two more runs in the top of the fourth to make it 5-2. St. Scholastica kept the bats going in the bottom of the frame as
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) hit her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to make it 5-4. A Morris error led to two more CSS runs to give the Saints their first lead of the game at 6-5.
Morris tied the game back up in the top of the sixth inning on a wild pitch. But that didn't last long as the Saints regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Saints had three straight singles to load the bases. Jazdzewski then hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored
Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS). The next batter, Logergren hit a three-run home run to center field to ultimately give the Saints a 10-6 victory.
Mizera came in relief and earned the win, striking out five in 3.2 innings. The Saints hit 12 home runs in the four conference games. Logergren had four of them and 12 RBIs on the weekend.
The Saints (10-10, 4-0 UMAC) were scheduled to face the University of Northwestern on the road on Tuesday, but those games have been postponed. Be sure to check csssaints.com for future schedule changes.
