Box Score 2 VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica softball team got their first conference wins of the season today at the UMAC Crossover with a 11-0 win over Crown College and then following that up with another commanding victory over Bethany Lutheran by a score of 14-1.
CSS 11, Crown College 0The Saints dominated their first game of the day by defeating the Crown College Storm by a score of 11-0 in five innings.
The Saints got things going right away with
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) singling to left field and then advancing to second base on a throwing error by Crown. After a couple outs for the Saints that allowed Hudack to advance to third base, she would steal home plate for the first run of the game.
The Saints' offense got going in the second inning starting off with a single up the middle from
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) and would later advance to second and third base off of two wild pitches. After a
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) walk,
Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) would hit an RBI single through the left side scoring McCabe and advancing Logergren to third base. Hudack would then hit a triple to right center, scoring both Logergren and Gordon.
Next up was
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS), who nailed a two-run home run to center field.
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) would also hit a home run to center field to make it back-to-back home runs to end the inning for the Saints. CSS would take a 7-0 lead into the third inning.
After a couple of walks by
Cayla Fogle (Oakdale, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) and
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS), Logergren would hit a three-run home run to right field to put the Saints up 10-0. Later in the inning,
Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) would get hit by a pitch and advance to second off a single from
Becca Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS). After a wild pitch, both runners would advance a base but after a throwing error by the Crown catcher, Moen would score what would be the final run of the game.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) would earn the win pitching for the Saints. She pitched all five innings while gave up three hits and no runs. She also walked one and struck out ten. Marissa Perales took the loss for the Storm pitching four innings and giving up 11 runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out two.
CSS 14, Bethany Lutheran 1The Saints' second game was much like the first, resulting in a 14-1 victory over the Vikings of Bethany Lutheran in five innings.
The action got started right away when Hudack hit a ground-rule double and then advanced to third off a wild pitch. One batter later, Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hudack to put the Saints up 1-0 after the first inning.
In the second inning the Saints' bats caught fire. It all started with back-to-back walks from McCabe and Borgeson. The next batter, Logergren, would hit a three-run home run to put the Saints up 4-0.
With one out, Hudack and
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) would both reach base on throwing errors by the Vikings with Johnson getting her second RBI of the game on a single, scoring Hudack. Another RBI single by Jazdzewski would score McGuiness and a
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) RBI single would score Johnson. McCabe would then force another walk to load the bases for Borgeson, who would hit a single to score Jazdzewski.
With two outs, Gordon would continue the trend with an RBI single of her own that would score Warren. One batter later, McGuiness would hit a grand slam to clear the bases and put the Saints up 13-0 and the score would remain the same for the rest of the inning.
In the third inning, Johnson would notch her third RBI of the game, this one coming on a solo home run to end the Saints' scoring for the game. The Vikings would put a run on the board in the bottom of the third but wouldn't be able get another run in as the game ended in five innings with the Saints winning by a score of 14-1.
Johnson would also pick up the win on the mound for the Saints. She pitched all five innings while giving up one run on three hits to go along with a walk and two strikeouts. Shannon Heitz would take the loss for the Storm going 1.2 innings while giving up 13 runs, four of them earned, walking four and striking out one.
The Saints are in action at the UMAC Crossover again tomorrow as they take on Martin Luther at noon and follow that up with a matchup against Minnesota-Morris at 2:00 in Vadnais Heights, Minn.
