Box Score 2 FOREST LARKE, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica softball team captured the UMAC regular season title with a sweep over Martin Luther by scores of 9-1 and 12-0.
Game 1CSS 9, Martin Luther 1The Saints finished off the first game strong with three runs in the fourth and fifth inning to win by a score of 9-1 in five innings.
CSS got on the board right away in the first on an error by the catcher that would score
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) to give the Saint an early 1-0 lead.
The bats started to get going in the third inning leading off with a double to left field from
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS). A couple batters later, Warren would also double to left field to score Hudack.
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) would follow that with a single to right field to bring in Warren to increase the Saints lead to 3-0 going into the fourth inning.
CSS would add on a couple more runs in the fourth inning.
Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) started it off with a single to left field and then advanced to second on a fielding error.
Becca Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) would get on base right after with a single up the middle and also advanced to second on the throw. Hudack would then bring in Gordon on a single through the left side to make it a 4-0 Saints lead. A Hudack stolen base, her 10
th stolen base on the year, and a
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) walk would set up Logergren for a two-RBI single to center field to bring in Hudack and Zwak to give the Saints a 6-0 lead going into the fifth.
Martin Luther would get on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI double to right center, but that would be all for the Knights.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Saints would tack on three more runs.
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) started the inning off with a single to left field, with
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) following that up with an RBI double down the left side to bring in McCabe from first base. A couple batters later,
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) would single to left field to set up Hudack for a two-RBI single up the middle to score McGuiness and Schiro to give the Saints the 9-1 win.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) picked up the win for the Saints going all five innings while striking out five Knight batters.
Game 2CSS 12, Martin Luther 0The Saints captured the regular season UMAC title with their second win of the night over Martin Luther by a score of 12-0.
Just like in the first game, the Saints got on the board in the first inning. Logergren doubled down the right field line to score Johnson for the first run of the game.
CSS continued putting up runs in the second inning.
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) started off the inning with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter,
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS), would single up the middle to score Jazdzewski. A couple batters later, Hudack would hit a double to right center field to bring in McGuiness. Johnson followed that with a single to center field to score Hudack to end the scoring for the inning with the Saints up 4-0.
After a quiet third inning, the Saints bats would catch fire in the fourth, scoring eight runs.
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) started the inning with a walk, followed by Gordon reaching first on a fielder's choice. McGuiness would then single up the middle with Hudack following that with a single of her own to center field. With the bases loaded, Schiro would reach first on a fielding error to bring in Gordon. Next, Logergren would clear the bases with a three-RBI double down the right field line.
Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) would pinch run for Logergren and would later score off a McCabe double to left field.
Ashley Boone (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) would then bring in McCabe on a single down the left field line. Borgeson would top off the scoring for the inning with a two-run home run to bring to make the score 12-0 which would end up being the final score.
McGuiness would get the win for the Saints, pitching all five innings while striking out six and allowing only two hits.
The Saints will be back in action tomorrow as they take on North Central in a double header. Those games will also be in Forest Lake with the first game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
