Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team used late inning heroics to open the doubleheader at Northland College en route to a sweep of the LumberJills on Wednesday. In doing so, the Saints now have a six-game lead with seven league games remaining.
Game 1: CSS 11, Northland 9The Saints trailed 9-4 entering the top of the seventh before plating seven in the inning to come from behind and win.
The LumberJills jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring four in the first and adding another in the second. CSS got on the board in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) to make it 4-1.
However, the Jills responded with a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame and then had a solo home run in the fifth to make it 9-1. In the top of the sixth,
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) had a RBI double and
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) hit a two-run home run to make it 9-4.
In the seventh, Warren led off with a walk. After a groundout, an error moved Warren to third. McCabe followed with a RBI single. Another walk put runners on first and second. Back-to-back Northland errors led to a second CSS run in the inning to make it 9-6.
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) followed with a two-run single to cut the margin to 9-8.
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) then stepped to the plate and hit a three-run home run to give the Saints an 11-9 lead.
The LumberJills loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Jills would fly out to center to end the game and give CSS the 11-9 victory.
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) picked up the win for the Saints. Johnson had two hits and three RBIs, while McCabe had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Game 2: CSS 13, Northland 2 (F/5)The Saints jumped on the Jills in game two, taking an 8-0 lead on their way to a 13-2 victory in five innings.
Logergren, McCabe and
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) picked up RBIs in the top of the first to give CSS a 3-0 lead. The Saints then plated five runs in the top of the third. Two runs came on a Hudack double.
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) also had a RBI single in the inning.
After Northland hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third, Borgeson got those two runs back on a two-run double in the fourth and make it 10-2.
Hudack hit a solo home run and Warren drilled a two-run home run in the fifth to make the final score 13-2.
Freshman
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) struck out five to earn the victory for CSS. Hudack, Johnson, Warren and McCabe each had three hits. Hudack and Borgeson also had three RBIs.
The Saints (20-10, 14-0 UMAC) are scheduled to be at home again on Friday as they play a make-up doubleheader against Martin Luther College. The games are set to begin at 3 p.m. on Kenwood Field.
