Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team defeated both fifth-ranked SUNY-Cortland 5-1 and Simpson College (Iowa) 7-5 on Friday at the Rebel Spring Games.
CSS 2, #5 SUNY-Cortland 1
The Red Dragons were NCAA Division III National Runners-up last season and are currently ranked fifth in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll.
After three scoreless innings the Saints were the first to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
To get things moving,
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) hit a single to left field followed by a single to left center from
Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS). Gordon pushed Borgeson to second base and in scoring position.
Two batters later,
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) came in to hit and delivered a double to right center scoring both Borgeson and Gordon to make it 2-0 CSS.
Down by two, the Red Dragons tried to respond in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Alicia Hibbard singled to right field scoring one, but the tying run was thrown out at the plate by a relay that included
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) to Gordon to
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) at the plate as the score was 2-1 Saints.
Cortland would not get a runner into scoring position the rest of the way as the Saints prevailed 2-1.
Mizera picked up her first collegiate win, scattering five hits in the complete game victory. Borgeson was 2-for-2 at the plate to the lead the CSS offense.
The win was the first for CSS against a ranked opponent since April 27, 2009 against Gustavus Adolphus College.
CSS 7, Simpson 5
In the second game of the day against the Storm, the Saints built a five-run lead and held off Simpson late to win 7-5.
After two scoreless innings, Simpson jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fourth, the Saints responded by scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Borgeson had a two-run triple and later scored on a
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) single.
In the top of the sixth, the Saints loaded the bases with one out.
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) and Warren had back-to-back RBI singles. Borgeson and Johnson then each drew bases loaded walks to make it 7-2 Saints.
Simpson tried to rally picking up one run in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the bottom of the seventh. The Storm had the tying run at first base, but a groundout back to the pitcher ended the threat and the game with the Saints coming out victorious 7-5.
McGuiness went the distance to earn the win, striking out three. Borgeson went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while McCabe was 3-for-4 to lead the CSS offense.
The Saints (6-4) will conclude their Spring Break trip tomorrow when they face Muskingum University (Ohio) at 9 a.m. (ET) and Hiram College (Ohio) at 11 a.m. (ET).
