Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team dropped its first game on Wednesday to Wheaton College (Ill.), but the offense came alive in its second game as the Saints defeated Wesleyan University (Conn.).
CSS 1, Wheaton 4
Rain delayed the start of action on the day for the Saints. The schedule was backed up about three-and-a-half hours. When the Saints finally took the field, Wheaton College (Ill.) scored three late runs to down the Saints 4-1.
The Thunder struck first with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first. It remained 1-0 until
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) scored on a Wheaton error in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 1-1.
The Thunder regained the lead in the top if the seventh with a two-run single and then added one more on a wild pitch to make it 4-1. The Saints put runners at second and third with no outs to start the bottom of the seventh, but a double play ended the rally as Wheaton prevailed 4-1.
Hudack was 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the CSS offense.
Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS) had six strikeouts in the loss.
CSS 11, Wesleyan 1 (F/5)
In their second game, the Saints offense got out of its mini-slump and defeated Wesleyan University (Conn.) 11-1 in five innings.
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had a big game both at the plate and pitching. She allowed only two hits in five innings and struck out five to get the win. At the plate, McGuiness was 3-for-3 with a pair of triples, a double, three runs scored and two RBIs.
CSS scored three runs in the first inning with RBIs from McGuiness and
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS). The Saints added four more runs in the second. McGuiness had her second RBI triple in as many innings,
Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) had a RBI and
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) had a two-run single.
After both teams traded runs, the Saints plated three in the top of the fifth. Borgeson had a two-run double in the inning. She finished with three RBIs in the game.
Wednesday was the last day for the Saints (4-4) at the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont. They will have an off-day tomorrow before heading over to Winter Haven and taking part in the Rebel Spring Games on Friday and Saturday. The Saints will open with fifth-ranked SUNY-Cortland on Friday at 1 p.m. (ET).
