CSS 2, Wheaton 1 (F/8)
The Saints took home their first win of the season with 2-1 victory against Wheaton College (Ill.) to start the day.
The bottom of the second began with walks by both
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) and
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS).
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) put out a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to scoring position and was followed by a single to left field by
Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) to score the Saints' first run.
It wasn't until the top of the sixth that some action returned to the field as Jessica Goeke got on base with a bunt for the Thunder. Alyssa Leonard followed with a triple scoring Wheaton's only run of the game.
Wheaton almost took the game in the top of the seventh and eighth failing to score with bases loaded each time.
Once the game went to extra innings in the eighth, the international tiebreaker was put into effect. That means a runner was placed at second to begin the inning. In the bottom of the eighth McCabe drilled a deep shot off the center field fence scoring Hudack to win the game in walk-off fashion 2-1.
McGuiness earned the complete-game win for the Saints, recording seven strikeouts.
The Saints pulled through with only three hits at the right time compared to five hits for Wheaton. McCabe had two of the three hits. Goeke played well for the Thunder with two hits and the only run for Wheaton.
CSS 3, Lake Forest 2 (F/8)
McCabe did it again in game two driving in the game-winning run in another extra-inning affair, defeating Lake Forest College (Ill.) 3-2 in eight innings.
Runs weren't scored until the bottom of the third where Whitney Leiderman and Kayla Borgra walked and then stole to get in scoring position. A wild pitch allowed Leiderman to score. Another wild pitch in the inning made it 2-0 Foresters.
The score remained 2-0 until the Saints plated two in the top of the sixth.
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS), Gordon, and Johnson all batted singles to load the bases at the start of the inning. Warren doubled to left field scoring Hudack and Gordon to tie-up the game.
The game entered extra innings where the Saints finished strong for the second time that day. With international tiebreaker in effect again, Johnson was placed on second base. Again McCabe sent another double to center this time to get Johnson home to make it 3-2. The Foresters stranded a runner at third in the bottom frame to make the final score 3-2.
Johnson came in relief and finished the last six innings allowing only two hits to earn the win. Jenny McTague pitched the first five innings for Lake Forest allowing five hits with four strike outs. Jessi Werner closed the game with one run and six strike outs in three innings, but picked up the loss.
Warren had two hits and two RBIs for the Saints. McCabe followed behind with two hits, as well. Tara Airola had two hits for the Foresters.
The Saints (2-2) will be in action again tomorrow when they face Anna Maria College (Mass.) and Meredith College (N.C). The Anna Maria game is scheduled for 11 a.m. Eastern time.
