Softball Loses Two to Open Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCHESTER, Minn. (csssaints.com)- The St. Scholastica softball team put up at least five runs in each of it first two contests, but also allowed 10 in each as it dropped both of its games on Saturday to open the season at the Luther College Dome Tournament.

CSS 6, UW-Eau Claire 10
The Saints came away with a 10-6 loss to open the season against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the afternoon.

The season got off to a rough start as starting pitcher Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) took a line drive off her arm on the very first batter of the season. The Blugolds took advantage, scoring six runs in the first two innings.

The Saints got their first runs of the season when Cayla Fogle (Oakdale, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) and Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) came across on an Eau Claire error in the top of the third. After the Blugolds got a run back in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-2, Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) would hit a grand slam in the fourth to make it 7-6.

However, in the bottom of the fourth, back-to-back walks to begin the inning eventually led to three Eau Claire runs to put the margin back at 10-6.

The Saints managed only one more hit the rest of the way in a 10-6 defeat.

Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) and Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) each a pair of hits at the plate for the Saints, while Nikki Brooks led for Eau Claire with three RBIs

McGuiness got the loss for the Saints. Chrisi Mizera (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East HS), in her collegiate debut, struck out five in five innings.

CSS 5, Hamline 10
The nightcap saw the Saints get off to a good start, but eventually fall to Hamline University 10-5.

The Pipers scored three runs in the top of the first, to of which on a home run. The Saints answered in the bottom of the frame as Warren had a two-run single and Hannah Borgeson (Woodville, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) had a two-run double. Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) also had a RBI as the Saints took a 5-3 lead.

The score remained 5-3 until the top of the fourth. Hamline would score two runs in the inning to tie the game at 5-5. The Pipers scored the two runs after having two outs and no one on base.

The sixth inning would haunt the Saints as CSS committed three errors and the Pipers had five runs come across to make it 10-5. That would also be the final score.

Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) picked up the loss for the Saints. Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) was 3-for-4 to lead the Saints offense,

The Saints will next be in action down in Florida over Spring Break starting Monday, March 10th. CSS will play six games in Clermont and four more at the Rebel Games in Winter Haven.
