Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team fell to Northland College on Monday by a score of 4-1, but still clinched the No. 1 seed for this weekend's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament.
The Saints captured the No. 1 seed due to Bethany Lutheran College being swept by Martin Luther College today. With one win vs. Northland on Wednesday or a loss by Bethany Lutheran tomorrow at Minnesota Morris, the Saints will clinch the conference regular season title outright.
Ashland native
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) doubled to leadoff this evening's contest and later scored on a
Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) RBI single to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead.
After CSS stranded runners at second and third with one out in the top of the second, the LumberJills (14-19, 9-10 UMAC) tied it up in the bottom frame on a RBI groundout.
It remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Jayna Loy hit a two-run home run for the Northland to give the 'Jills a 3-1 lead. The LumberJills added another run in the inning to make it a 4-1 game.
The Saints would load the bases in the top of the seventh with one out, but the game would end on a double play as the 'Jills prevailed 4-1. The loss snaps a seven-game win streak for the Saints.
Tracy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) picked up the loss for CSS, while Loy earned the win for Northland. Five different Saints recorded hits for the team's offense this evening.
The Saints (22-12, 15-4 UMAC) will have their first action of the spring on campus on Wednesday when they host the 'Jills for a doubleheader to close the regular season. However, it won't be on their actual home field (Kenwood Field), instead it will be on the turfed Saints Field (Football/Soccer). The action is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
