Saints Blow Past Crown

(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team scored a combined 21 runs in the first innings of a doubleheader matchup against the Crown College Storm en route to a 15-0 and 21-1 sweep in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action Friday morning.

In the 15-0 victory the Saints scored all 15 runs in the first three innings.  Eight different CSS players had a hit while Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) led all batters with two hits. 

Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) had a team-high three runs batted in while Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS), McGuiness, and Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) each had two RBI's apiece.

Tracy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) earned the win for the Saints, pitching a complete game three hitter.  Roach struck out six batters while walking only one Crown batter.  The Saints defense committed no errors while the Storm committed three in the field.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Saints used a 16 run first inning to easily pull away from Crown, winning 21-1 after five innings.

The Saints' bats were hot, combining for 17 total hits.  Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS), Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS), Kowalczyk, Kassandra McCabe, Jazdzewski, Gordon, and Jenna Germscheid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS) all had two hits apiece.  Johnson led all batters with five RBIs. 

Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) led all base runners with three runs scored apiece.

McGuiness picked up the win for CSS pitching a complete game three-hitter.  She allowed one run, a run which was scored on an error.  The Saints committed one error on defense while Crown (0-13, 0-9 UMAC) committed two errors.

The Saints (13-10, 6-2 UMAC) will face Minnesota Morris tomorrow in the UMAC's Game of the Week. The teams will square off in a doubleheader. The Cougars and Saints are second and third in the conference standings, respectively.  Game one is slated to start at 10 p.m. in the Vadnais Heights Sports Center.  Tune into csssaints.com for updates from these games.
