Saints Split with Eagles in Morning Doubleheader Matchup

(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team settled for a split with the Northwestern College Eagles winning game one 7-3, but dropped game two by a score of 3-2 Tuesday morning in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action held at the Vadnais Sports Center.

In game one of the doubleheader, CSS struck first in the opening inning when Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) scored on an infield throwing error.  NWC would plate two runs in the top of the second inning to make the score 2-1.

The Saints took advantage of two throwing errors in the bottom of the third inning when Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) scored on an error which loaded up the bases for Saints as well as tied the game at 2-2.  Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) hit a hard ground ball the next at bat, forcing another throwing error by the Eagle shortstop.  Kassandra McCabe and Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) would score on the error to put the Saints up 4-2 after three innings.

The Eagles would close the lead to 4-3 after a RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.  CSS would add two runs in the bottom half of the inning when Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) hit a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) and McCabe.

CSS would add an insurance run the sixth when Johnson doubled to left field scoring Hudack.  The Saints would win game one 7-3.

The Saints would collect eights on offense.  McCabe led the offense with three hits and scored two runs.  Johnson pitched a complete game for CSS, allowing six hits and one earned run.  Johnson walked three batters but struck out four Eagle batters. 
The CSS defense did commit two errors in the field.

Game two of the doubleheader saw NWC score in the top of the second inning off of a fielder's choice.  The Saints would respond in the bottom half of the inning when McGuiness would double to center field scoring Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS). 

CSS would plate another run the following inning when McCabe hit an RBI-single to left field scoring Johnson to allow the Saints take a 2-1 lead after three innings.

The lead would diminish the following inning as the Eagles would recapture it with a pair of RBI-doubles.  CSS had a chance to score a game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning but left the runner stranded on third as the Saints fell 3-2.

NWC (8-14, 4-4 UMAC) had five hits the second game and only committed one error in game two, compared to five in the first game.  The Eagle relief pitcher fanned five Saint batters.

The Saints would muster five hits in game two with two coming off of the bat of McGuiness.  The Saints committed two errors in the field.

Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) took the loss for the Saints pitching a complete game five hitter.  Roach finished the game with five strikeouts and
only one walk.

CSS (11-10, 4-2 UMAC) is scheduled to play Crown College this Friday in a doubleheader.  Game one is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. local time.  Check into csssaints.com to for updates from these games.
