Box Score 2 ROSEMOUNT, Minn. (csssaints.com) – In a doubleheader that featured the final two unbeaten teams in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), the St. Scholastica softball team and Bethany Lutheran College split on Sunday night at the Irish Dome with Saints taking game one 3-1 and the Vikings game two 10-8.
Game one's scoring didn't get started until the top of the fourth inning.
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) led off the inning with a single and two batters later
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) hit a two-run home run to center field to give CSS a 2-0 lead.
Then in the top of the fifth,
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) homered to center to extend the Saints lead to 3-0. After the Vikings (13-11, 6-1 UMAC) stranded a runner on third in the sixth, Bethany got one across in the seventh to make it 3-1. With the tying run at the plate,
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) induced back-to-back groundouts to give the Saints the 3-1 victory.
Roach struck out four and scattered six hits to earn the complete-game victory. Hudack and McCabe each had a pair of hits to pace the CSS offense.
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS)'s three-run home run in the top of the first got things started for the Saints in game two. The Vikings would hit a home run and add another run in the second to make it 3-2.
A Logergren RBI single in the third put the CSS lead at 4-2. However, in the bottom frame the Vikings loaded the bases with no outs and ended with five runs in the inning, including the last two runs coming on a CSS error. Bethany added three more runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 10-4.
The Saints cut the lead in half in the fifth on another Jazdzewski three-run home run. Later in the inning, the Saints had runners at second and third with no outs when they ran themselves into a triple play to end the inning.
McCabe had a RBI in the sixth to make it 10-8, but that is as close as the Saints would get, dropping the nightcap 10-8.
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) picked up the loss for the Saints. McCabe went 3-for-4, while Jazdzewski finished with six RBIs.
The Saints (10-9, 3-1 UMAC) are scheduled to be at home this upcoming weekend, but with the recent and the forecasted snow that is in double. Keep checking csssaints.com for further schedule updates.
