Saints Swept in Doubleheader despite Extra Inning Affair

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OSKALOOSA, Iowa (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team took the Central College Dutch, a Midwest region perennial power, to extra innings in game one of a doubleheader featuring teams who met last year in the NCAA Regional Tournament.  The Dutch would win the first contest in dramatic fashion via a ninth inning walk-off home run.  Game two saw the Dutch tack on 11 runs in the first two innings en route to an 11-0 win in five innings Friday afternoon.

In the thrilling first contest of the doubleheader, the Saints got on the board first when Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) doubled to left field to bring in Andrea Mogren (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) to put the Saints up 2-0 after three innings.

Central College would answer in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs coming in on back-to-back RBI singles.  CSS would answer in the top of the fifth to reclaim the lead at 3-2 when Kowalczyk doubled again to center field to score Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS).

The Dutch would tack on a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning to tie it up at 3-3.  Both teams would be unable to generate any potential scoring threats in the seventh inning and the teams would go to extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth inning the Saints' Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) would double in the top of the ninth and the Dutch would intentionally walk Kowalczyk to put runners on first and second base.  The Saints would be unable to bring in Johnson as the next batter would foul out to left field.

The Dutch would win the game in dramatic fashion when the second batter of the bottom half of the ninth inning homered to right center field to propel Central College over the Saints by a score of 4-3.

The Saints would muster only five hits and were struckout ten times in game one.  CSS would commit no errors while the Dutch committed three.

Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) took the loss for the Saints pitching all 8.1 innings while scattering eight hits and striking out four Dutch batters.

Game two of the doubleheader was all Central College as they would plate three runs in the first inning and eight more in the second inning as the Saints would fall 11-0 in five innings.

The Saints were held to two hits, one apiece by Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) and Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS).  Only two Saints batters would strikeout in the game.

Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) would take the loss for the Saints allowing eight hits and 11 runs, six earned.  The Saints would commit two errors in game two while the Dutch (15-5) committed zero.

CSS (6-8) will look to rebound tomorrow as they take on 2012 WIAC Champion and NCAA Tournament participant UW-Eau Claire and a tough opponent in the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties.  Game one against UW-EC is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. matchup against the Gusties.  Tune into csssaints.com for updates from these games.
