Softball Drops a Pair on Final Day in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team ended its time at the National Training Center with a 6-4 record after falling to Bethel University 13-0 and William Paterson University (N.J.) 6-5 on Saturday.

The Saints began the day against MIAC opponent Bethel. The Royals struck for at least three runs in four of the five innings and held the Saints to just a pair of hits in a 13-0 victory in five innings.

Caroline Kivisto was 4-for-4 with seven RBIs in the game for Bethel. Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) and Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) had the two lone hits for the Saints.

In the second game of the day, saw the Saints fall to William Paterson 6-5. The Pioneers got the scoring started with two runs on two CSS errors in the bottom of the first.

The Saints put runners on second and third with nobody out in the second, but could not get them in. However in the fourth, the Saints got a RBI double from Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) and a RBI single by Andrea Mogren (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS). The Saints also got a pair of runs on errors by the Pioneers to take a 4-2 lead.

William Paterson responded in the bottom frame with two-out, two-run triple to tie the game at 4-4. The Pioneers then homered to lead off the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. They added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 6-4.

The Saints would get runners on second and third with one out in the sixth and Mogren came through with another RBI single to place Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) and make it 6-5. However, the tying run would be stranded at third. CSS then went quietly in the seventh as the Pioneers prevailed 6-5.

Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) picked up the loss for the Saints. Mogren was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the offense.

The Saints (6-6) will be back in action at the end of March with four games down in Pella, Iowa. The Saints will face Central College (Iowa) in doubleheader on Friday, March 29th and then the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, March 30th.
