Softball Defeats both Lawrence and Farmingdale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team held on to defeat Lawrence University (Wis.) 6-5 and then used a nine-run inning to defeat Farmingdale State University (N.Y.) 11-3 on Friday.

In the first game of the day the Saints jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Lawrence, before the Vikings scored five runs in the sixth and seventh to make it interesting, but the Saints prevailed 6-5.

Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) had a RBI single and Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) scored on a Lawrence error to give the Saints a 2-0 lead after one inning. It stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) drove in Jenna Germscheid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS) to extend the CSS lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) tripled home two runs to make it 5-0.

A McGuiness sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 6-0. However, the Vikings struck for four runs in the sixth to make it 6-4. In the seventh, Lawrence got its first three batters on base and scored on a fielder's choice to make it 6-5 with one out. Tracy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) then induced a pair of infield pop-ups to give the Saints the 6-5 victory.

Roach struck out six in the complete-game win for the Saints. Hudack and Spiering each had a pair of hits to pace the offense.

In the second game of the day, the Saints scored nine runs in the second inning to defeat Farmingdale State 11-3 in the five innings.

Hudack recorded a RBI double and Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) had a RBI single in the top of the first to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.

CSS then poured it on in the second. Spiering had a two-run double. Kowalczyk had a RBI double. McGuiness had a two-run triple. Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) and Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) also had RBIs in the inning as the Saints led 11-0.

The Rams would plate a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, but the game ended by mercy rule 11-3 after five innings.

McGuiness had five strikeouts in five innings to earn the win. She also drove in two runs and scored three times. Warren was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

The Saints (6-4) will finish up their Florida schedule tomorrow when they face Bethel University and William Paterson University (N.J.). The Bethel contest is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. local time and William Patterson contest at noon local time.
