Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team won its first game on Wednesday, defeating Denison University (Ohio) 4-2, but was unable to hold the lead in the second game and fell to Bowdoin College (Maine) 4-3 to snap its four-game winning streak.
The Saints began the day with an early morning 4-2 win over Denison. The Big Red scored a run in the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Then in the bottom of the fourth, the Saints loaded the bases for
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS), who smacked it over the fence in center field to put the Saints up 4-2.
That is all starting pitcher
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) would need as she earned her first win of the season, striking out four and scattering five hits in the complete-game victory.
CSS outhit the Big Red 9-5 with
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) and
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) each recording a pair of hits. The Big Red fell to 3-2 with the loss.
In the second game of the day, the Saints jumped out to a three-run lead, only to let it slip away and lost on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh 4-3 to Bowdoin.
CSS took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a
Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) sacrifice fly that plated Spiering. The Saints then scored two more in the top of the second thanks to a two-out error by the Polar Bears as the Saints led 3-0.
It remained 3-0 until the bottom of the third when Toni DaCampo hit a solo home run to put the Polar Bears on the board. Defense hampered the Saints in the fifth inning, committing three errors in the inning, including two with two outs. The Polar Bears got two runs across in the inning to tie the game at 3-3.
In the sixth inning, the Saints had a runner thrown out at home and left the bases loaded as the game remained tied. CSS would also get a runner in third with one out in the seventh, but could not get her across.
The Polar Bears made the Saints pay in the bottom of the seventh, getting a one out triple and that was followed by a walk-off single as Bowdoin went on to win 4-3.
McGuiness picked up the loss in relief. Roach went 4.2 innings to start the game and struck out four, while allowing just two hits. CSS managed just four hits in the loss, including two from
Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS). Bowdoin improved to 2-0 with the victory.
The Saints (4-4) will have the day off tomorrow and be back in action on Friday when it faces Lawrence University (Wis.) and Farmingdale State College (N.Y.). The Lawrence game is scheduled to begin at noon local time with the Farmingdale State game to follow.
