Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team defeated both Keene State College (N.H.) and Manhattanville College (N.Y.) on Tuesday at the National Training Center.
The Saints opened the day with a 5-4 victory over Keene State. The Saints held off a late rally from the Owls despite committing six errors in the contest.
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) led off the game for the Saints with a single and later scored on a
Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) double to put the Saints up 1-0. After Keene State tied it in the top of the second, CSS plated three in the bottom frame.
Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) had a RBI double and
Lexi Smith (Hudson, Wis./Hudson HS) smacked a two-run double to make it 4-1.
Spiering scored on a passed ball in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-1, but the Owls struck for a pair of runs in the sixth to make it 5-3.
In the top of the seventh, the Saints committed a pair of errors, but the Owls stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position as the Saints held on for the 5-4 victory.
Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) earned her first collegiate victory, striking out two in six innings of work.
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) picked up the save. Spiering finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. The Owls dropped to 1-3 with the loss.
The second game of the day saw the Saints rally from a pair of three-run deficits to defeat Manhattanville 7-6.
The Valiants struck first with a two-run double in the bottom of the first. After Manhattanville added another run in the third, the Saints rallied with three runs in the fourth.
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) had a RBI double and
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) helped herself at the plate with a two-run triple.
Manhattanville regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth scoring three unearned runs with two outs to make it 6-3. The Saints responded once again in the top of the sixth. McCabe doubled in
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) to make it 6-4. McGuiness followed with a RBI double of her own to cut the Valient lead to 6-5. Later in the inning, Spiering singled in McGuiness to tie the game. The go-ahead run came on a Smith sacrifice fly to score
Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) to make it 7-6.
Johnson finished off the Valiants the final two innings as the Saints prevailed 7-6. Johnson earns her first collegiate win in a complete-game effort. McCabe led the offense for CSS with a pair of hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Manhattanville falls to 3-4 with the loss.
The Saints (3-3) will face Denison University (Ohio) and Bowdoin College (Maine) tomorrow. The Denison game begins at 8 a.m. local time and the Bowdoin contest at noon local time.
