Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team picked up its first victory of the season on Monday when it defeated Cornell College (Iowa) 9-4.
Earlier in the day, Ripon College (Wis.) scored at least one run in every inning against the Saints to win by a 7-0 margin. The Saints managed just two hits in the loss.
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) had one hit and
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) had the other.
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) struck out three in the defeat, while Stephanie Rieuwpassa struck out 13 in the win for the Red Hawks. Ripon improved to 2-1 with the victory.
Against the Rams in game two, the Saints fell behind 3-0, before a five-run third inning. CSS, who committed three errors in the top of the second that led to two runs, took advantage of a Cornell error in the third, which led to the big inning.
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) had a RBI double to get the Saints on the board. Then after a one-out error by the Rams,
Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) ripped a two-run single to tie the game. With two outs,
Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) had a two-RBI double to put the Saints up 5-3.
After the Rams got a run in the top of the fifth, the Saints responded with three in the bottom frame.
Kara Warren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) had a RBI single and
Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) had a two-run single to make it 8-4. St. Scholastica added one more in the sixth with a Kowalczyk RBI double to make the final score 9-4.
Tracy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) picked up the win in her first collegiate start, going 5.2 innings. Her sister,
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS), came in relief and pitched the final 1.2 innings. The Saints finished with 10 hits in the win. Cornell fell to 2-3 with the loss.
The Saints (1-3) will face Keene State College (N.H.) and Manhattanville College (N.Y.) tomorrow. The Keene State game begins at 10 a.m. local time with the Manhattanville contest starting at 2 p.m. local time.
