Record Night for the Waidacher Sisters

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Both Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) and Isabel Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Graubunden Canton School (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) tied a NCAA Division III record with eight points and Isabel set a program record with five goals in the St. Scholastica women's hockey team's 10-0 victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The 10 goals scored set a program record, which breaks the previous record of nine also set against Finlandia during the 2011-12 season. Nina tied Michelle Fischer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall)'s program record of five assists in a game.

The NCAA Division III record book shows that three players have recorded eight points in a game, with the most recent taken place in January of 2011. The NCHA record book also has UW-Superior's Mika Sharpe with eight points in a game in December of 2000. Sharpe also holds the record for most goals in a game at six.

However teammates, let alone sisters, have ever each recorded eight points in a game in NCAA history.

Isabel scored the first three goals of the game for the Saints, all in the first period. Her first tally came eight minutes in on an assist from Nina. Less than five minutes later she scored again with Nina and Madison Smith (Edmonton, Alberta/Vimy Ridge Academy (Spruce Grove Saints)) credited with the assists. Her final goal came with a little over three minutes to play with an assist from Ivy Smith (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS (St. Cloud State)). The score stood at 3-0 at the first intermission.

Fischer got the scoring started in the second at the 13:24-mark to make it 4-0. Nina had her third assist and Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) also registered an assist.

It was Nina getting into the goal column three minutes later with Isabel and Fischer assisting. Isabel scored her fourth goal on the power-play 57 seconds after with Fischer and Nina on the assists.

Nina scored on the power-play with seven minutes to go and Isabel had the assist. Nina completed her own hat trick five minutes later with Isabel assisting again to make it 8-0 at the second intermission.

Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) got her second goal of the season in the first seven minutes of the third period to extend it to 9-0. Michelle Rebeck (St. Andrews, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) and Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)) had the assists. It was the first time in the evening that the Waidacher-Fischer line did not score.

The final goal put the Waidacher sisters in the record book, as with 4:24 remaining Isabel put her fifth puck into the net with Nina picking up her fifth assist and Fischer her third to make the final score 10-0.

Lost in all of this was Sheridan Friesen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Ontario Hockey Academy)'s first collegiate shutout, stopping 15 shots to earn her first win of the year. CSS out-shot Finlandia 54-15 for the game. The Saints were 3-for-7 on the power-play, while the Lions were 0-for-6.

The Saints (2-0-1, 1-0-0 NCHA) and Lions (0-3-0, 0-3-0 NCHA) will complete their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. Catch the action live on Saints Sports Net.
