Back-and-Forth Game Ends in Tie

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The ninth-ranked St. Scholastica women's hockey team trailed 3-2 after one and led 6-3 after two, but the game ended in a 6-6 tie with Lake Forest College (Ill.) Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The Foresters started the scoring five minutes into the game as Michelle Greeneway got her first of the night assisted by Logan Taylor.

The Saints responded with two goals, the first by Nikki Logergren (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Northern Stars)) at 6:50 assisted by Kaitlin Johnston (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater HS).  A little over a minute later, Isabel Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Graubunden Canton School (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) scored her ninth goal of the season giving the Saints a 2-1 lead over Lake Forest.  Waidacher was assisted by her sister Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) and Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS).

Lake Forest answered with at 9:26 with an unassisted goal by Logan Taylor.  Two and a half minutes later, Emily Wybo capitalized with a power play goal.  She was assisted to Laura Reckenwald and Morgan Pope. At the end of the first Lake Forest led the Saints 3-2 on the scoreboard and outshot the Saints 12-6.

The Saints went on to tally four unanswered goals in the second period.  Ivy Smith (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS (St. Cloud State)) began the scoring three minutes into the period.  It was her first collegiate goal.  Smith was assisted by Briana Stephens (Chicago, Ill./Hopkins HS (Minn.)).

Halfway through the period Nina scored on the power-play assisted by Michelle Fischer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and Isabel.

Michelle Rebeck (St. Andrews, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) scored her first of the season with about seven minutes left of the second period.  Rebeck was assisted by Isabel.

Less than a minute-and-a-half left in the second period, Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) scored her third of the season assisted by Kelly Ahlgren (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS). After the second period the Saints led the Foresters 6-3 and outshot them 18-5.

At the start of the third period, the Foresters switched goaltenders bringing in Stacey Dierking which proved to be tougher competition for the Saints.

The next three goals would be left unanswered by the Saints as Laura Reckenwald scored on a power-play five minutes into the period.  Reckenwald was assisted by Morgan Pope and Alex Stensland.

With three-in-a-half minutes left in regulation time, with the goalie pulled and on a power-play Greeneway lit the lamp, assisted by Logan Taylor.  Just over a minute later, Greeneway scored the game-tying goal with the extra skater as she was assisted by Morgan Pope and Sarah Gilbride.

The game went into overtime, but neither team could find the back of the net.

The Foresters were 3-for-3 on the power-play. The Saints outshot the Foresters 39-31.  Saints Goaltender Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) stopped 25 shots for the Saints. Her cousin, Casey Hartfiel, had 18 saves for the Foresters before she was pulled. Dierking had 15 saves in the third period and overtime.

The Saints (5-0-2, 4-0-1 NCHA) and Foresters (3-2-2, 3-2-2 NCHA) will do it again tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Mars Lakeview Arena. The action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
