DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team will open the 2013-14 season Friday night at former conference member University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
-The NCHA saw some changes after the end of last season as the four University of Wisconsin programs left the NCHA to play in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
-The Saints not only won their first NCHA postseason game last season, but they also won their first series, sweeping Lake Forest College in the O'Brien Cup quarterfinals.
-CSS is about to begin its fourth season as a program, meaning players from the inaugural recruiting class are in their senior seasons.
-Seven players remain from the inaugural recruiting class led by senior captain
Michelle Fischer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall). Fischer is a two-time honorable mention All-NCHA selection, who led NCAA Division III last season with 30 assists.
-The oldest of three Waidachers on the team, senior
Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)), was an All-NCHA selection as a sophomore.
-The junior Waidacher,
Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)), became the program's first AHCA/CCM First Team All-American a season ago. Waidacher finished second in the country in points per game (1.60) and third in assists.
-The newest Waidacher, freshman
Isabel Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Graubunden Canton School (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) comes in as the fastest of the three Waidachers. Isabel most recently was a part of the 2013 World Championship team for Switzerland.
-The Saints also welcome back junior defenseman
Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS). Blair was a second team AHCA/CCM All-American. The first team All-NCHA choice was third in the conference among defensemen with 18 points on seven goals and 11 assists. Her 18 points were fifth-best on the team.

Kaitlin Johnston (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater HS) moved from defenseman to forward midway through last season and recorded four goals in the final five games.
-The Saints, who finished eighth in the nation in scoring last season, should be up near the top of Division III again this season. However, the biggest unknown will be goaltender play.
Sheridan Friesen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Ontario Hockey Academy) enters her junior season after appearing in 11 games as a freshman and just two games last season. Freshman goalie
Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) comes in from Buffalo High School, which is the same high school as head coach
Jackie MacMillan.
-Coach MacMillan also brought in transfers
Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)) and
Ivy Smith (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS (St. Cloud State)). Guzzo comes from UW-River Falls and is the younger sister of St. Scholastica's first captain Libby Guzzo. Smith comes over from Division I St. Cloud State.
-The Saints have been picked to finish fourth in the NCHA this season, but receiving the second-most first place votes in the preseason coaches' poll.
-The Blugolds will now be part of the four-team WIAC.
-UWEC has been picked to finish fourth in the league, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
-The Blugolds lost 10 players from last year's squad, but return five of its top-six point-scorers from last year, all of whom had 11 or more points.
-Junior Sam Knutson led the team with 10 goals and five assists.
- The top returning goalie is sophomore Paige Turner, who started 17 games a season ago. Turner was eighth in the NCHA a season ago with a .910 save percentage.
-UWEC finished eighth in the league last season and was swept by UW-River Falls in the O'Brien Cup quarterfinals.
