Late Goals Cost Women’s Hockey First Game Versus Lake Forest

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey was unable to find the net until early in the third period and two late Lake Forest College empty-net goals sealed the deal as the Foresters took game one of the two-game series by a score of 4-1 Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The opening period saw both teams get a combined 17 scoring chances, but neither team was able to find the back of the net and the teams were deadlocked 0-0 heading into the first intermission.  Lake Forest had the only penalty in the 1st period, a two minute minor for cross checking.  Shots were 10-7 in favor of the Foresters.

The second period finally saw Lake Forest (10-2-4, 7-1-4 NCHA) get on the board at the 9:13 mark.  The Foresters were unable to find the back of the net for the remainder of the period, as well as the Saints, and the score was 1-0 heading into the second intermission.  Shots in the period were 10-8 in favor of the Foresters.

The final period saw the Saints finally get on the board just a 1:26 into the period with a goal from Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)).  Jordan Klimek and Gina Dodge (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) would assist on the goal.  Lake Forest would respond at the 9:03 mark with a power play goal. 

CSS was unable to find the net for the rest of the game and two late empty-net goals in the last 25 seconds of the game gave Lake Forest the 4-1 victory.

Lake Forest was able to get 32 shots on net for the night.  Stacy Dierking was solid in net for the Foresters, saving 27 of 28 shots.  The Foresters were penalized four times for eight minutes.

The Saints were able to get 28 shots on net, despite being outshot in each period.  Waidacher had the only goal for the Saints who were penalized four times for eight minutes.  CSS was 0-for-4 on the power play.

St. Scholastica (9-6-3, 6-5-2 NCHA) will host Lake Forest for game two tomorrow afternoon at Mars Lakeview Arena with puck drop scheduled for 2 p.m. local time.  A live broadcast of the game can be seen on Saints Sports Net.
