Saints Comeback to Defeat Stout in Final Minute

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team was down 3-1 to the UW-Stout Blue Devils in the final period, but the Saints were able to score three goals, including Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) )'s game-winning goal with 20 seconds left, to complete a huge comeback win 4-3 Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The opening period saw plenty of action in the opening minutes as both teams found multiple scoring opportunities.  The Saints were finally able to get on the board at the 7:44 mark when Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) was able to slam one home to put the Saints up 1-0.  Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) assisted on the goal.

The second period saw the Saints get penalized just seven seconds into the period and the Blue Devils would capitalize on the power play to knot it up 1-1 just a minute into the period.  There would be end-to-end action for the remainder of the period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net and the teams went into the second intermission tied up 1-1.

The third period was hectic throughout as Stout (9-9-2, 4-9-0 NCHA) was able to score twice in four minute span, once on the power play and then an even strength goal at the 9:29 mark.

CSS would begin the comeback at the 7:03 mark when Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) found the back of the net on a powerplay, with the assist going to Brenden Kotyk (Regina, Saskatchewan/Michael A. Riffel HS (Dauphin-MJHL) ).  Momentum would start to shift the Saints way and finally the Saints would even up the score at 3-3 when Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) put one home with assists going to Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and his brother, Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)).

The Saints would complete the comeback when Miller would win a faceoff in the Blue Devils end with 20 seconds remaining and
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) would bury the puck to propel the Saints to a 4-3 victory.

Stout was able to get 31 shots on net while being penalized 10 times for 31 minutes.  The Blue Devils were 2-for-7 on the power play.

The Saints finished with 33 shots on net and got just enough from Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) with 31 saves.  CSS was 1-for-4 on the power play.

St. Scholatica (8-12-1, 4-9-1 NCHA) will travel to St. Norbert College next week.  The first faceoff scheduled for 7 p.m. local time.  Tune into csssaints.com for updates from that game.
