Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – In the final Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) regular season meeting between the Bridge Rivals, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Superior 4-3 Thursday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Next season, the Saints will join the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA), while the 'jackets will be in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) hockey league.
CSS struck first tonight as an
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) shot got through the UWS goaltender and with the puck sitting free in the crease,
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) cleaned it up to make it 1-0 CSS.
Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) also got credited with an assist.
The Yellowjackets (11-8-1, 6-6-1 NCHA) knotted it up 51 seconds later when the CSS goaltender got caught behind the net and Joey Massingham was able to wrap it around into an open net. Then just after a UWS power-play expired, the 'jackets took the lead on a Michael Ray goal to make it 2-1 at the first intermission.
It remained 2-1 until the third period when the Saints tied it up as Corcoran scored his second of the night two minutes into the period. Miller and Valenti once again had the assists.
With 11 minutes remaining, the Saints would have an errant pass in their offense zone which found the stick of Josh Kesler who just came off the bench and he would go in on a breakaway and put UWS up 3-2.
Kesler scored again five minutes later to give Superior a 4-2 lead. However, the 'jackets would be called for a major penalty 30 seconds after the goal. Once the Saints' two-minute penalty expired,
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored on the power-play with 2:58 remaining to cut the margin to 4-3.
UWS would get called for a slashing penalty with 1:49 left, which meant the Saints had a two-man advantage for 1:35. CSS would pull the goalie in the final minute making it a 6-on-3 for 45 seconds, but UWS goaltender Ryan Pinoniemi was up to challenge as the Yellowjackets hung on for the 4-3 win.
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) had 29 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Pinoniemi finished with 27 saves. The loss snaps a four-game unbeaten streak for the Saints, while the 'jackets end a five-game losing skid.
The Saints (7-12-1, 3-9-1 NCHA) will be in action again tomorrow night when they host the University of Wisconsin-Stout at Mars Lakeview Arena. Puck drop is at 7 p.m., following the women's game at 4 p.m. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
