Women’s Hockey Wins Big at Finlandia

Box Score HANCOCK, Mich. (csssaints.com) – Gina Dodge (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) recorded a hat trick and the St. Scholastica women's hockey team recorded a program record 67 shots on goal in a 7-0 win over Finlandia University (Mich.) Saturday night in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play.

Michelle Fischer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) put the Saints on the board with a power-play goal eight minutes into the contest. Courtney Esse (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS (UW-Superior)) had the assist. Dodge scored her first goal of the night with less than five minutes to play in the opening period to make it 2-0 CSS at the first intermission. CSS outshot Finlandia 28-1 in the opening period.

Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) made it 3-0 just 25 seconds into the second period. Her sister, Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)), had her first of three assists on the night. Dodge scored her second with 6:35 left in the second period playing a man down for the second short-handed goal in program history. Briget Cojocar (Limerick, Saskatchewan/Lafleche HS (Melville Prairie Fire)) had the assist. CSS led 4-0 at the second intermission.

Dodge completed the hat trick at the midway point of the third period with Fischer getting the assist. Dodge's hat trick is the sixth in the program's two-plus years. Brenna Flatley (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) scored the sixth goal of the night less than three minutes later. Jordy Klimek (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) and Waidacher had the assists.

Klimek and Waidacher also assisted the final tally of the evening when Alana Levido (Richmond, British Columbia/Burnaby North Secondary (Pacific Steelers)) scored on the power-play with four minutes to play to make the final 7-0.

The Saints outshot the Lions 67-7 with Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine/Brewster Academy (New England College)) stopping all seven shots to earn her first shutout in a CSS uniform. Breanna Hayes had 60 saves in the loss for the Lions.

The Saints (8-4-2, 5-3-1 NCHA) and Lions (0-13-0, 0-9-0 NCHA) will play game two of the series tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 eastern time and 1:15 local time.
