PREVIEW: Soccer Teams Host Advantage Emblem Cup Starting Friday

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's and women's soccer teams will be hosting the 2012 Advantage Emblem Cup this weekend at Saints Field with three games scheduled on Friday and four games on Saturday.

Tournament Schedule at CSS:
Friday:
Men's Soccer: St. Scholastica vs. UW-Whitewater-Noon
Women's Soccer: St. Scholastica vs. Macalester-2 p.m.
Women's Soccer: UW-Whitewater vs. Concordia-Moorhead-4 p.m.
Saturday:
Men's Soccer: St. Scholastica vs. Macalester-11 a.m.
Men's Soccer: Concordia-Moorhead vs. UW-Whitewater-1 p.m.
Women's Soccer: Macalester vs. UW-Whitewater-3 p.m.
Women's Soccer: St. Scholastica vs. Concordia-Moorhead-5 p.m.
Note: UW-Superior Men's Soccer team is also involved and will play its games on its home field vs. Macalester @ noon on Friday and vs. Concordia-Moorhead @1 p.m. on Sunday.

About the Saints
2011 Record: 16-3-2, 11-0-1 UMAC

  • Head Coach Barry Chastey is just two wins shy from his 100th career victory. Chastey can become the third coach in program history to record 100 wins.
  • CSS has been picked once again to win the UMAC regular season title, receiving five first-place votes on the preseason coaches' poll. The Saints have won the regular season title the past two years.
  • The Saints have to replace graduated goalkeeper Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School), who was a four-year starter for the Saints and holds program records for most wins and shutouts in a career.
  • Junior Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) has seen some action in net in his first two seasons. He and fellow junior Bryan Nyberg (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) will see the majority of action this season.
  • The Saints return 2011 second team All-UMAC and 2010 honorable mention junior defender Caleb Yurek (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS). Also back on the back end is sophomore Ben Cullen (Clough, Northern Ireland/Shimna Integrated College), who started 19 games as freshman.
  • Second team All-UMAC midfielder Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) also returns as does fellow junior Rob Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS). At forward, expect sophomore Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) to see a lot of time early.

About the Warhawks
2011 Record: 12-8-0, 8-0-0 WIAC

  • Tony Guinn begins his first year as head coach. Guinn was the head women's soccer coach at Western Illinois University from 2007-11 and Saint Mary's University (Minn.) from 2004-06.
  • The Warhawks have made the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons.
  • Whitewater has been predicted to win the WIAC for the fourth straight season, receiving three first-place votes.
  • Whitewater has compiled a 14-0-2 mark against WIAC adversaries during the three seasons that men's soccer has been recognized as a conference sport.
  • The Warhawks return nine starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team.

Series History:
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

2011 Record: 10-7-1, 6-3-1 MIAC

  • New Macalester head coach Gregg Olson played at the University of Vermont and was an assistant men's soccer coach at Stanford before being hired last winter by Macalester.
  • The Scots haven't suffered a losing record over the past 25 years.  Since 1987 the Scots have 24 winning campaigns and one .500 year.
  • Two-time MIAC goal-scoring champ Taylor Rasmussen has netted 32 career goals at Macalester, seventh on the school's all-time chart.
  • Macalester has made 10 appearances in the NCAA playoffs and has won the MIAC crown 10 times.
  • Three starters for the Scots were named to the NSCAA Scholar All- North/Central Region team last season: graduated midfielder Reid Usedom, forward Taylor Rasmussen and midfielder Robin Forslund.

Series History: (CSS is 4-5-1 vs. Macalester)
The Saints defeated the Scots in last year's season opener in St. Paul 2-1. Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) had the game-winner for the Saints.


About the Cobbers
2011 Record: 5-10-3, 17-2 MIAC

  • The Cobbers are led by first-year head coach Ben Schneweis this season. Schneweis was an assistant for the North Dakota State women's soccer program last season.
  • Concordia returns goalkeeper Peter Runquist who was an honorable mention All-MIAC selection and was second in total saves in the conference last season.
  • The Cobbers returns seven starters from last year's squad that finished 10th in the MIAC.
  • Concordia lost three-time All-MIAC defender Riley McGlynn, who was also an all-region selection in 2010.
  • The leading returning point scorer is senior Jared Rice, who recorded three goals and a pair of assists in 2011.
  • The Cobbers are picked to finish 11th in the MIAC, according to the preseason coaches' poll. 

Series History: (CSS is 8-11-0 vs. Concordia)
The Saints fell to the Cobbers last season in Moorhead by a score 1-0 in overtime. Ethan Vogel netted the game winner for Concordia eight minutes into the first overtime.


About the Yellowjackets
2011 Record: 12-6-2, 4-4-0 WIAC

  • The 'jackets will be in search of their third straight winning season for the first time in program history this season.
  • Last year's senior class – Logan George, Eric Nilsen, Dan Warnke and Thomas Shuldheisz was Mooney's first.  All four received All-WIAC recognition and all four ranked in the top ten in points per game in the WIAC in 2011.
  • Alberto River-Garcia is the top returning goal scorer (5) and point scorer (13).
  • Rivero-Garcia (2011) and Nate Engel (2010) are returners who have previously been named All-WIAC.
  • The 'jackets were the second-highest scoring team in the WIAC in 2011.
  • It will be a brother act on the Yellowjacket sidelines in 2012, as Mooney's younger brother Ben, another former Yellowjacket, will serve as an assistant coach.

About the Saints
2011 Record: 16-5-1, 11-0-1 UMAC

  • The Saints qualified for their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five years in 2011. The Saints fell to third-ranked and unbeaten Trinity (Texas) in the first round.
  • CSS has won eight straight UMAC regular season titles and have been the unanimous favorite to win it again this year, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
  • The Saints return UMAC Freshman and Player of the Year Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), who recorded 20 goals last season.
  • Other first team All-UMAC Saints back this season, include Andrea Beatt (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS), Taylor Cunningham (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) and Maggie Dolan (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS).
  • Just like the men, the CSS women will have someone new in net this season as Bailey Mahlum (Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck HS) and Molly Bergmann (Walker, Minn./Walker-Hackensack-Akeley HS) both graduated.
  • Freshmen Kelsey Reeves (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River HS ) and Megan Seymour (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS ) are vying for that spot, along with sophomore Angie Toepper (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS).

  • Macalester has posted 23 consecutive winning seasons and consecutive MIAC winning seasons.
  • New coach Michele Cornish helped lead George Mason (Va.) to the 1985 Division I national crown and was head coach at Division I North Carolina-Asheville from 1994 to 2010.
  • The Scots posted 13 shut outs a year ago, including eight in MIAC matches.
  • Goalkeeper Rosie Glenn-Finer has a 0.59 career GAA with 23 shutouts. Glenn-Finer was an all-region selection a year ago.
  • Two-time all-region and All-MIAC defender Kat Lenhart also returns for the Scots.
  • The Scots were picked tied for third in the MIAC preseason poll.

Series History: (CSS is 1-7-0 vs. Macalester)
The Saints fell to the Scots 1-0 in overtime in the season opener in St. Paul last year. Kat Lenhart scored the game-winner eight minutes into the first overtime period.


About the Cobbers
2011 Record: 13-4-6, 7-1-3 MIAC

  • Head coach Dan Weiler ends his five-year reign as both the men's and women's soccer coach to focus primarily on the women this season.
  • The Cobbers advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last season for the second time in the last three seasons. Concordia has made the NCAA Tournament five of the last six seasons.
  • Concordia has been picked to win the MIAC this season, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
  • All-American forward Sarah Rounds returns for the Cobbers and has 98 career points to her name.
  • All-Region goalkeeper Ali Nelson is also back and has recorded 29 career shutouts.
  • Concordia has posted 39 MIAC wins in the past five seasons – the most of any conference school.

Series History: (CSS is 2-11-0 vs. Concordia)
The Cobbers defeated the Saints 3-2 last season in Moorhead. Laura Prosinski scored two goals for Concordia.

  • The Warhawks advanced to the sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last season in their first-ever appearance.
  • Whitewater is ranked 23rd in the NSCAA Preseason Coaches poll, marking the first time the program has been ranked in the preseason.
  • The Warhawks have been picked to win the WIAC, receiving six first-place votes.
  • Whitewater returns eight starters from last year's squad, including two-time first team All-WIAC forward Christina Tooren.
  • Gone from last year's squad is three-time WIAC Player of the Year Emily Gerber.
  • Ryan Quamme assumes the head coaching duties this season.  Quamme was as an assistant for both the men's and women's soccer programs for the last four years.
