Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica softball team hit three home runs and had a three-run lead in the top of the seventh, but fell to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 11-10 at LumberJills Field on Saturday.
The Saints got on the scoreboard field on a
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) solo home run in the bottom of the second. After the Blugolds tied it in the top of the third,
Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) drilled a three-run home run to give CSS a 4-1 lead.
Eau Claire would get a two-run double and a RBI single in the top of the fourth to tie it at 4-4. The Saints regained the lead in bottom of the frame with a
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) RBI single to make it 5-4. The Blugolds tied it in the fifth and then would take their first lead of the day in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single to make the score 7-5.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) hit CSS's third home run of the day on the first pitch of the inning to make it 7-6. Later in the inning, Hudack drove in
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) with a one-out RBI to tie the game at 7-7. After CSS loaded the bases Kowalczyk and Spiering each drew walks and Jazdzewski had a RBI single to give the Saints a 10-7 lead.
In the top of the seventh, the Blugolds hit back-to-back doubles to start in the inning cut the margin to 10-8. The Blugolds then got a pair of run-scoring singles, driving in three in total to take an 11-10 lead. The Saints went down in order in the bottom of the seventh as the Blugolds prevailed.
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) picked up the loss in relief. Spiering started and pitched six innings. Eau Claire out-hit the Saints 16-14. Schiro led CSS with three hits, while Kowalczyk had three RBIs. Hudack and Jazdzewski each added two runs batted in. Laura Raflik earned the win in relief for the Blugolds (13-8).
The Saints (10-8) will be back at Kenwood Field on Tuesday for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheader against Crown College. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
