Softball Splits at Conference Foe Northwestern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica softball team was held in check in the first of two games against Northwestern College, losing 4-1, but rebounded to win the second contest 10-2 Friday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

In the first game, the Saints got on the board first in the second inning when Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) advanced on three passed balls scattered throughout the inning to score CSS's only run of the game.  The Eagles scored three runs in the fourth inning in which the Saints committed two errors resulting in runs.  The Eagles tacked another run in the fifth and never relinquished the lead after that.

Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) pitched six innings, giving up five hits and four runs, three earned.  Roach struck out four and walked three in the loss.

Offensively, the Eagles (7-13, 2-1 UMAC) were led by Briana Rodgers who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Kelsey Stoltman added two runs for the Eagles as well. Molly Johnsen pitched a complete game three-hitter to go along with 11 strikeouts.  She allowed only one run and had only one walk. 

In the second game, the Saints' bats found their mark scoring two runs in the opening inning and then scoring seven total runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.  The Eagles would score their only two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Saints would tack on one final run in the top of the seventh and close out the game for a 10-2 victory.

Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) picked up her fifth win of the year in a complete game effort in which she had a perfect game until the fourth inning.  Spiering struck out eight, allowed two hits and did not walk a batter. 

The Saints got multiple hits from Moen and Tauer, while five other Saints connected to finish the game with nine total hits.  The Saints only had two RBIs for the game by Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) and Spiering. Defensively, the Eagles committed nine errors.

The Saints (10-7, 2-1 UMAC) will face the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire tomorrow at noon Ashland, Wis.
