PREVIEW: Softball Looks to Extend Winning Streak at the UMAC Crossover

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica softball team will squeeze in four more games in the next two days as it takes part in the UMAC Crossover in Ashland, Wis. The Saints have already played four games in the past three days.

Game Times:
Friday – 2 p.m. vs. Bethany Lutheran College
Friday – 4 p.m. vs. Martin Luther College
Saturday – 10 a.m. vs. Presentation College
Saturday – 2 p.m. vs. University of Minnesota Morris

Last Action:
The Saints defeated Martin Luther College yesterday 7-2 at Kenwood Field. Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) hit two home runs and added a triple in the win.

St. Scholastica Saints (25-8, 16-1 UMAC)
The Saints captured the conference regular season title for the fourth straight year and the 12th time in the last 13 years with a 7-2 victory over Martin Luther College Thursday evening … By doing so, the Saints are guaranteed in hosting the UMAC Softball Tournament in 2013 … CSS has won 15 games in a row and are just two away from tying the program record for consecutive wins set during the 2006 season … Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) needs just two more doubles to tie the program record for most doubles in a season, set by teammate Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) in 2010 … She also is just three RBIs away from tying the single-season mark set current assistant coach Rilee Dawson … Kowalczyk has reached base in the last 17 consecutive games … Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) is three RBIs away from tying the program record for career runs batted in … She is currently tied for the most doubles in a career (48)  … Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) has flirted with two perfect games this week … The first was against Northwestern College where she was perfect with two outs and two strikes in the top of the seventh before giving up a hit and the second was Thursday against Martin Luther where she was perfect with two outs in the sixth before a CSS error ended it … The Saints are 15-0 this season when leading after five innings, but are 0-6 when trailing after five.


Bethany Lutheran Vikings (13-22, 9-8 UMAC)
The Vikings are tied with Northland College for the fourth and final tournament spot … Those two teams will play each other on Friday afternoon … BLC beat Minnesota Morris this past week to rebound from a loss to Presentation College … Ashley Jensen leads the way on offense hitting .358 despite only playing in 22 games … Three other players hit above a .300 batting average … Amanda Edmison paces the Viking bullpen with a 4.86 earned run average in 21 appearances … The bullpen holds opponents to a .310 batting average.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time vs. Bethany Lutheran: 20-1)
The Saints swept the Vikings at Kenwood Field in mid-April, winning game one 8-0 in five innings and then hanging on for a 3-2 win in game two.  Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) homered in the game two win.


Martin Luther Knights (8-18, 7-10 UMAC)
With the loss yesterday against the Saints, the Knights are two games out of the fourth and final UMAC Tournament spot … MLC holds the tiebreaker for Minnesota Morris and with a win against Northwestern, hold the tiebreaker over the Eagles … The Knights have been a relatively streaky team this season with a pair of three-game winning streaks, but have four different losing streaks of three or more games … Sarah Free leads the team offensively with a .432 batting average and eight doubles … Karla Opperman has driven in a team-high 22 runs and leads the team with four home runs … Laura Miller leads the team with six victories inside the pitching circle.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Martin Luther: 47-7)
The Saints defeated the Knights yesterday at Kenwood Field by a score of 7-2. Tiedeman hit two home runs in the win.


Presentation Saints (10-26, 6-11 UMAC)
The PC Saints sit ahead of last place Crown College in the UMAC standings … The Saints are riding a three-game UMAC win streak heading into the crossover this weekend and still have a slim chance at making the Tournament … Michelle Stratton leads the way for the Saints on offense with a .378 batting average and team high seven home runs … Four other players have above a .300 batting average … The Saints have six different pitchers in the bullpen, with three having a 0.00 earned run average in one pitching start …  Jenae Pantle and Danielle Naumann usually share pitching duties on a consistent basis and the bullpen combines for a 7.04 earned run average while holding opponents to a .327 batting average.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time vs. Presentation: 24-0)
The Saints won a pair of 12-0 games over Presentation last weekend in Aberdeen. CSS hit six home runs in the two wins.


Minnesota Morris Cougars (14-16, 11-6 UMAC)
The Cougars sit in second place in the UMAC standings behind St. Scholastica … They have a one-game edge over Northwestern in third and two games over Northland College and Bethany Lutheran … Molly Olson leads the charge on offense with a .494 batting average to go along with 44 hits and 13 doubles … Jordan Iverson has been strong at the plate as well, batting .360 for the Cougars … Mariah Essig has had a strong year on the mound, having a 9-6 record with a 3.88 earned run average … The bullpen combines to have a 5.66 earned run average and holds opponents to a .330 batting average.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time vs. Minnesota Morris: 26-1)
The Saints swept the Cougars last season, winning game one 9-1 and game two 12-6. Roach struck out a career-high 13 in the game one win.
