Tiedeman Homers Twice as Saints Clinch UMAC Regular Season Title

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) hit a pair of home runs and Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) once again flirted with a perfect game as the St. Scholastica softball team clinched the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship defeating Martin Luther College 7-2 Thursday evening at Kenwood Field.

Today's game was a make-up contest from an April 13th doubleheader that was rained out. The Saints were able to get one game of the doubleheader in the next morning and played the second game this evening.

It didn't take long for the Saints to put runs on the board as Tiedeman led off the bottom of the first inning and on the second pitch she saw hit a towering shot over the right center field fence to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) doubled in Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) as the Saints led 2-0 after an inning.

It was a pair of RBI triples in the bottom of the second that extended the lead to 4-0. Tiedeman first tripled to right and Kali Carlson (Duluth, Minn/Duluth Central HS) followed with a triple to right center. Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) recorded a RBI double in the third to make it 5-0.

Tiedeman homered again in the fourth, this time to left field to give CSS a 6-0 lead. Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) gave the Saints their final run of the game with a RBI single through the left side in the fifth.

Speaking of Roach, she was cruising inside the pitching circle sitting down the first 17 batters she faced. If you recall, Roach had a perfect game going with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on Tuesday against Northwestern College. Today's perfect game would end on a CSS error with two outs in the sixth.

The Knights (8-18, 7-10 UMAC) were still hitless entering the seventh, but Madeline Scott led off the inning with a single to right. Martin Luther would end up with a pair of runs in the inning to make the final score 7-2.

Roach threw only 69 pitches to improve to 15-6 this season. She allowed just that one hit and struck out two. Tiedeman was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Hudack also had a pair of hits.

The Saints win their fourth consecutive UMAC regular season championship and their 12th in the last 13 years. CSS also runs its winning streak to 15 games. The program record is 17 games set during the 2006 season.

The Saints (25-8, 16-1 UMAC) will wrap-up conference play this weekend with the UMAC Crossover in Ashland, Wis. The Saints will open tomorrow with Bethany Lutheran College at 2 p.m. and then play the Knights once again at 4 p.m.
