Box Score 2 MORRIS, Minn. – The St. Scholastica softball team extended its winning streak to 11 games with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Minnesota Morris on Sunday at Cougar Field.
The Saints won game one 9-1 and then took the nightcap 12-6. The start of the doubleheader was delayed two hours due weather. CSS now has a five-game conference lead in the loss column with at least seven games remaining. The make-up date for the game against Martin Luther has not been determined. If that comes to fruition, the Saints have eight conference games remaining.
Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) hit a three-run home run in the top of the first to give CSS a 3-0 lead. That home run, her 20 of her career, tied her with Erica (Bond) Kozacek for second all-time on the program's home run list. Both teams would get a run across in the third inning to make the score 4-1 Saints.
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS)'s two-run double in the fifth extended the margin to 6-1.
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) and
Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) each had sacrifice flies in the sixth and Jazdzewski hit a solo home run in the seventh to give the Saints a 9-1 victory.
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) struck out a career-high 13 batters to earn the win. Tauer finished with four RBIs, while Jazdzewski had three RBIs.
Game two started much like game one as Jazdzewski continued her hot hitting with a three-run home run in the top of the first to give CSS a 3-0 lead after one inning. For Jazdzewski it was her fourth home run in the last three games and in about a 28-hour span.
St. Scholastica added to its lead in the top of the third with a
Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) two-run single and Spiering plated one with a single to make it 6-0. It would be 9-0 after the top of the fourth with Tauer and Kowalczyk registering RBIs and Tiedeman scoring on a wild pitch.
After the Cougars got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, Tauer and Jazdzewski had RBIs in the fifth to make the score 11-2. The Cougars (13-15, 10-5 UMAC) kept the game alive with four runs in the fifth, but Tauer recorded another RBI in the seventh to make the final score 12-6.
Spiering earned the win inside the pitching circle, striking out a season-high 11 Cougars. Tauer was 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Jazdzewski had four RBIs and Kowalczyk drove in three runs.
