Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica softball team scored 12 runs in the first three innings, including nine in the second, on its way to a 14-7 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Thursday at Kenwood Field.
The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader in Superior on Wednesday, but unplayable field conditions due to the rain postponed those games and the doubleheader was cut to one game at CSS today.
After the 'Jackets were held scoreless in the top of the first,
Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) drilled a two-run home run over the right-center field scoreboard to make it 2-0 CSS after one. For Kowalczyk it was her fourth home run of the season.
Superior responded in the top of the second, getting four runs across in the inning to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Saints loaded the bases with one out and
Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) tripled down the right field line, clearing the bases to make it 5-4 Saints. Later in the inning
Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) doubled in Tiedeman and
Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) scored on a UWS error to make it 7-4.
Still in the third, starting St. Scholastica pitcher
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and would hit her first collegiate grand slam and her second home run of the season on a ball that was just off the glove of the left fielder to extend the margin to 11-4.
The Yellowjackets tried to hang around in the third inning with three runs in the inning to make the score 11-7, but the Saints got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame when
Barb Malyuk (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) led off with a triple and then scored on a Tiedeman groundout.
CSS scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Malyuk scored on a wild pitch and Tauer drove in Tiedeman to make the final score 14-7 Saints.
Roach kept the 'Jackets bats in check for the final four innings, scattering four hits during that span to improve to 9-6 on the year. Roach struck out seven to earn the victory. Lindsay Garay picked up the loss for the Yellowjackets.
Tiedeman and Tauer each had three hits with Tiedeman driving in three runs. Roach had two hits at the plate and four RBIs coming on that grand slam. The Yellowjackets fall to 8-15 overall with the loss.
The Saints (17-8, 8-1 UMAC) return to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action this weekend when they travel to Aberdeen, S.D. and Morris, Minn. for a pair of doubleheaders. CSS will begin with a doubleheader against Presentation College starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
