Softball Gets One Game in Before Rain Halts Game Two

| By:
Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. – After three games yesterday, the St. Scholastica softball team traveled to face Northland College in doubleheader on Sunday and won game one 11-3 in six innings, but the second game would be suspended in the top of the third due to rain.

A Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) single gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game one. However, the LumberJills had a pair of RBI singles in the bottom frame to take a 2-1 lead.

CSS answered with two runs of its own in the top of the second on a Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) two-run double. That inning was extended due to a Northland error.

The score remained 3-2 St. Scholastica until the top of the fifth when the Saints would plate four runs. Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) started with a sacrifice fly to bring Jenna Germscheid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS). Tauer then followed with a two-run double and Kowalczyk with a RBI single to make the score 7-2.

CSS kept it going in the sixth with four more runs. Barb Malyuk (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) recorded a RBI, along with RBI singles from Tiedeman and Tauer. Kowalczyk's RBI double gave the Saints an 11-2 advantage. The 'Jills (13-12, 7-3 UMAC) tried to keep the game going in the bottom of the sixth, getting one run across, but would strand two runners in scoring position as the game ended by the eight-run mercy rule 11-3.

Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) earned her third win of the weekend, striking out four and scattering nine hits in the win. Tauer and Kowalczyk each registered four RBIs with Kowalczyk going 4-for-4.

In the second game, the Saints trailed 3-2 after two innings, but got three runs in the top of the third before the rains came. The game would ultimately be suspended and will resume at a later date. Check csssaints.com for details on the make-up date.

The Saints (16-8, 8-1 UMAC) will be back in action on Wednesday when they will face Bridge rival University of Wisconsin-Superior for a doubleheader in Superior. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
