Box Score The CSS softball team scored eight of its 10 runs in the first two innings to propel past the Northland LumberJills in the UMAC opener 10-3 at Kenwood Field on Sunday afternoon.
The victory over the 'Jills (7-8, 0-1 UMAC) comes over two weeks after the Saints last game which was the finale of their trip to Florida.
After shutting out the LumberJills in the top of the first the Saints pushed across three in the bottom half with the help of a 2-RBI double from the bat of
Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) to make it 3-0 after one.
The Saints continued to pour it on in the second with Kowalczyk's help once again. CSS had already pushed three runs across when Kowalczyk hit a two-run home run to extend the lead to 8-0 through two innings.
The 'Jills began a comeback in the fourth as they pushed a couple unearned runs across to cut the Saint lead down to 8-3.
The Saints proved to be too much for Northland as they scored a run in both fourth and fifth innings at the bats of
Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) and
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) to extend the lead to 10-3.
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) ended the day on the mound with a strikeout and a double play to secure the victory for CSS and get back to .500 with a 4-4 record. Roach went seven strong allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out nine 'Jills on the day.
Kowalczyk was the offensive star for the Saints this afternoon going 2-3 with a home run, double and four RBIs. Hudack ended the day 2-4 with a triple, stolen base, two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Saints (9-6, 1-0 UMAC) will hit the road this weekend as they continue UMAC play when they travel to St. Paul to take on the rival Northwestern Eagles (5-10) in a double header on Friday. First pitch will be at 1 p.m.
