CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team was defeated by Babson College (Mass.) 7-5 and William Paterson University (N.J.) 6-3 on Saturday to finish 7-3 on its spring trip.

In the first game against Babson College the Beavers used a five-run top of the third to hand the Saints their second loss in Florida 7-5.

CSS got the scoring started on a Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) RBI double in the bottom of the first. The Saints made it 2-0 after two innings when Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) scored on a Babson error.

After the Saints recorded a quick out in the top of the third, the Beavers recorded six straight hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple that led to five runs and a 5-2 Babson lead.

Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) had a RBI double in the bottom frame to make it 5-3. Babson then hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth and plated another in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 7-3.

CSS did not go quietly in the bottom of the seventh as Kali Carlson (Duluth, Minn/Duluth Central HS) led off with a triple and then scored on a Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) single. The Saints proceeded to load the bases and Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) drew a walk to force in a run and make it 7-5. However, the Saints would ground out to end the game to make the final 7-5 Babson. CSS stranded the bases loaded twice in the game.

Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) picked up the loss for the Saints. Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) was 4-for-4 to lead the Saints offense. Babson improved to 1-2 on the year.

In the second game against William Paterson University the Pioneers never trailed in a 6-3 victory over the Saints. This was the season opener for William Paterson.

The Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the third on four hits and two CSS errors. The Saints got one back in the bottom half on a Tiedeman RBI single. William Paterson scored an unearned run in the sixth and plated two more unearned runs in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead.

Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 6-3 game, which wound up being the final.

Spiering picked up the loss for CSS. Kowalczyk had a pair of hits to lead the offense. Head coach Jen Walter would end up protesting the game and now it will be up to the NCAA whether it will be counted or determined a no contest.

The Saints (8-6) will be off until Sunday, April 1st. That day is scheduled to be CSS's home and Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener against Northland College. Check csssaints.com for future updates.
