Softball Suffers First Defeat in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – After winning the opener on Thursday over Anna Maria College (Mass.) 9-2 to extend its win streak to six, the St. Scholastica softball team fell to New England College (N.H.) 2-0 for its first defeat in the Sunshine State.

To open the day, the Saints scored at least one run in each inning that it batted on their way to a 9-2 victory over Anna Maria. Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the first and then Andrea Wick (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) had a RBI single in the bottom of the second to make it a 2-0 CSS lead.

Wick had another RBI single in the bottom of the third as part of a three-run inning. Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) drove in a run in the fourth and Wick scored on an error in the fifth to make it 7-2. Shauney Moen (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Jenna Germscheid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS) had RBIs in the sixth to make the final score 9-2.

Wick, who also started the game for the Saints inside the pitching circle, struck out seven in five innings to earn her first collegiate victory. She was 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Anna Maria falls to 0-5 with the loss.

In the second game of the day against New England College, the Pilgrims scored two unearned runs and that was enough to hand the Saints their first loss in Florida.

New England got its first run in the bottom of the second on a squeeze bunt to make it 1-0. The runner that scored reached base via error and then advanced to second on a passed ball. The Pilgrims made it 2-0 in the fourth, scoring on a groundout after advancing to third on a passed ball.

The CSS offense was held to only four hits and could not manage more than one hit in an inning and only had one runner reach third base in the game.

Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) did not allow an earned run and struck out four in the loss for the Saints. Hudack had two of the four hits to pace the offense. New England College improves to 2-6 with the win.

The Saints (6-4) will be in action again tomorrow when they faceoff against Salve Regina (R.I.) and Fredonia State (N.Y.) in the evening.
