CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team defeated both Westfield State College (Mass.) and Ripon College (Wis.) on Tuesday for its fourth and fifth straight wins.
The Saints defeated Westfield State to open the day by a 4-2 score.
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) opened the game for the Saints with a triple. She later would score on a double steal attempt. The Owls scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) scored on a Westfield State error in the top of the second to tie the contest.CSS then took the lead in the third on a
Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) RBI single and extended the lead to 4-2 in the fourth on a
Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) RBI single.
That is all
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) needed as she pitched the final six innings for the Saints, striking out nine and allowing only three hits to earn her third win of the season. The top four batters in the CSS order all had two hits. It was the first loss of the season for Westfield State as it dropped to 3-1 on the year.
In the second game against Ripon, the Saints used a seven-run second inning to pull away from Red Hawks and win 10-3.
If you recall, Ripon College ended the Saints' season last year at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Eau Claire, Wis.
The Red Hawks got on the board in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly, which drove in an unearned run to make it 1-0. The Saints responded in the bottom half of the inning as Kowalczyk hit a two-out, two-run single to make it 2-1 CSS.
Back-to-back St. Scholastica errors in the top of the second led to two more runs for Ripon as the Red Hawks regained the lead at 3-2.
In the bottom of the second, the Saints took control with seven runs coming across in the inning. Ripon had three errors in the inning. Tiedeman had two-run double in the inning. Kowalczyk and Hudack also had RBIs in the inning as CSS had a 9-3 lead after two innings.
After all of that, there would only be one more run scored in the game and that was when
Kali Carlson (Duluth, Minn/Duluth Central HS) came home on a double steal attempt in the fourth inning to make the final score 10-3.
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) struck out seven and did not allow an earned run, while giving up four hits in the complete-game victory. Hudack had a pair of hits to lead the Saints at the plate. The Red Hawks fall to 2-2 with the loss.
The Saints (5-3) will have tomorrow off and will be in action next on Thursday morning when they face Anna Maria College (Mass.) and New England College (N.H.).
