CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Scholastica softball team opened its spring trip by defeating Heidelberg University (Ohio) 4-3 in extra innings and then had a walk-off single to defeat Thiel College (Pa.) 2-1 in the nightcap.

The Saints got on the board in the top of the first as Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) his a double down the left field line to plate Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) to make it 1-0.

Heidelberg tied it in the third, scoring an unearned run in the inning. CSS recaptured the lead in the fourth on a Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) two-our RBI single to score Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS).

Tauer hit her second RBI double of the game in the fifth as Kali Carlson (Duluth, Minn/Duluth Central HS) came around to score to make it a 3-1 game.

However, Heidelberg would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth thanks to some miscues by the Saints to make it 3-3 and the game went to extra innings.

The international tiebreaker rule was put into effect placing a runner at second base to begin each half inning. Schiro put the Saints up 4-3 in the top of eighth with a sacrifice fly bringing in Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS). Heidelberg would strand the tying run in the bottom of eighth with a pair of fly outs to center as the Saints prevailed 4-3.

Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) earned her first win of the season for the Saints, pitching all eight innings, striking out six, while allowing only one earned run. Tauer had a pair of doubles with two RBIs and Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) also had a pair of hits. Heidelberg suffers its first defeat of the season and is now 2-1.

The nightcap didn't see much for scoring until Thiel College plated the first run in the top of the seventh. The Saints responded in the bottom half as Tiedeman hit a two-out RBI double to tie the game and then Tauer would drive her in as the Saints won in walk-off fashion 2-1. The Tomcats fall to 0-2 with the loss.

Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) went the distance, striking out and did not allow an earned run as she picked up her second win of the season. Tiedeman and Tauer each had two hits apiece to lead the Saints offense.

The Saints (3-3) will square off against Westfield State College (Mass.) and Ripon College (Wis.) tomorrow afternoon.
