LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team saw its second season come to an abrupt end on Sunday following a 3-1 defeat to Lake Forest College in the quarterfinals of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) O'Brien Cup playoffs.

The Foresters, who won 4-2 on Saturday, scored two quick goals to begin the game as Jenn Caldwell scored two minutes and 46 seconds into the contest and Marissa Weber scored 55 seconds after that.

The Saints cut the margin in half with four minutes left in the period on a Michelle Rebeck (St. Andrews, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) goal. Cara McMannis (Holland, Manitoba/Treherne Collegiate Institute (Pembina Valley Hawks)) and Jana Henry (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate HS (Thunder Bay Midget AA Queens)) had the assists. Both teams had 10 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes.

Both teams had a pair of power-play opportunities in the second period, but neither team lit the lamp. The Foresters out-shot the Saints 14-10 in the period.

Jessica Dare extended the Lake Forest lead back to two with six minutes left in the third period. That score held up as the Saints fell 3-1.

The Foresters finished with a 38-31 shot advantage on CSS. Rachel Borchardt (Willow River, Minn./Willow River HS ) had 35 saves in the loss, while Stacey Dierking had 30 saves for Lake Forest. The Foresters (15-9-2) move on to the semifinals where they will face top-seed University of Wisconsin-River Falls next weekend.

The Saints (13-9-5) made great strides in their second season, finishing tied for fourth in the conference after a ninth-place finish last year. The Saints more than doubled their win total in conference play and nearly doubled it overall. CSS was 8-2 in one-goal games and were a perfect 7-0 when leading after two periods.

Borchardt, who joined the Saints for the final eight games of the season, is the only senior on the team. She ended up leading the team with 228 saves. Borchardt played two years on the CSS club team prior to joining the Saints last season.
