MARQUETTE, Mich. – The St. Scholastica softball team earned its first win of the 2012 season on Sunday as it split its final two games of the Finlandia Dome Tournament at the Superior Dome.
The Saints began the day by putting a late scare into the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, but eventually fell to the Titans 5-3. This was the first meeting between the two programs.
Oshkosh pushed a run across in the top of the second and then two CSS errors helped the Titans get two runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. A two-run home run in the fourth extended it to 5-0.
The Saints were held to two hits until the bottom of the seventh. In that inning, CSS got the first three batters on base.
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) then got a RBI groundout to make it 5-1.
Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Armstrong HS) followed with a RBI single. With two outs
Barb Malyuk (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) drove in another run with a single to make it 5-3. However, the Saints struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) struck out 10, but picked up the loss. Courtney Wautier had 11 strikeouts in the win for the Titans (2-2).
The Saints capped off the Finlandia Tournament by picking up their first win of the season over the host, Finlandia University (Mich.), 8-5.
In an error-filled game, which saw 11 combined between the two teams, CSS fell behind early thanks to two unearned runs by the Lions in the top of the first. The Saints scored two unearned runs of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Schiro scored on an error and Spiering drew a bases loaded walk.
The Saints took their first lead when
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) led off the bottom of the third with a home run. Later in the inning Malyuk had a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2 CSS.
The Lions (4-2) responded by hitting a home run to lead off the fourth and then had a RBI single to tie the game at 4-4. Finlandia then took a 5-4 lead after scoring an unearned run on the fifth.
However, the Saints answered in the bottom half and took advantage of a Lions error that prolonged the inning as Spiering hit a three-run home run with two outs to put the Saints back in front 7-5.
Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) gave CSS insurance with a RBI single in the sixth to make the final score 8-5.
Spiering got the win for the Saints, allowing only two earned runs and scattering five hits for the complete game. The win is the first in Spiering's career. Spiering also finished with four RBIs at the plate. Hudack and Schiro each had a pair of hits and scored twice.
The Saints (1-3) will be off until Spring Break when they travel to Clermont, Florida starting March 12th-17th.
