MARQUETTE, Mich. – The St. Scholastica softball team was defeated by both Simpson College (Iowa) and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday to begin its 2012 season at the Finlandia Dome Tournament, taking place at the Superior Dome.
The Saints began the day being on the short end of a 16-2 loss to Simpson in five innings. The Storm broke the game open with an eight-run fourth inning and then tacked on five more runs in the fifth to complete the 16-2 win.
Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) and
Ally Sweeney (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) each had RBIs for the Saints.
Kali Carlson (Duluth, Minn/Duluth Central HS) was 3-for-3 in the contest.
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) picked up the loss for CSS, while Kacee Arey earned the win for the Storm (1-1).
In game two, UW-Stevens Point plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Saints 7-3.
After the Pointers scored in the bottom of second, the Saints tied it up on a
Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) RBI single that drove in
Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS).
A two-run double in the fourth put Stevens Point back in front 3-1. Then in the sixth, the Pointers got a bases loaded two-run double and then added two more in the inning on a single and a bases loaded walk to make it 7-1.
Tiedeman would drill a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough in a 7-3 loss.
Tiedeman was 3-for-4 in the loss.
Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) picked up the defeat, while Michelle Jones earned the win for the Pointers (1-0).
The Saints (0-2) will continue play at the Superior Dome tomorrow when they face the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 10 a.m. eastern standard time and then host, Finlandia University, at 2 p.m. eastern time.
