DULUTH, Minn. – The CSS women's hockey team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets 4-2 after giving up two unanswered goals late in the third period at Mars Lakeview Arena on Friday evening.

The loss to the Yellowjackets (15-6-3, 13-4-2 NCHA) halts the Saints' chance of earning the number two seed in the O'Brien Cup playoffs as they are now five points behind UWS.

The first period was stagnant as a flurry of face-offs occupied most of the clock.  It wasn't until the 19:43 mark that Alex Blair (Drake, Saskatchewan/Lanigan Central HS) found the back of the net on an assist from Jordy Klimek (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) to give the Saints a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

In the second it was the 'Jackets who started the scoring four and a half minutes in when Bailey Lane scored a power play goal on assists from Kaiti Graham and Kiara DeKezel to tie the game up at one.

It was six minutes later when UWS tied it up as Ashlee Olson scored just her second goal of the season to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead. Graham and Sheryl Kaskiw earned assists on the play and the score would remain going into the second intermission.

The third period started the Saints' way as Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) scored just over three minutes in assisted by Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) to tie the game up at two.

The Saints had a power play opportunity later in the period and at the 12:18 mark Malin Zetterberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Huddinge Gymnasium) had what she thought was the go-ahead goal but after conferring the referees decided the puck didn't quite break the plain of the goal and the score remained tied.

Then at the 14:10 mark of the third Ashlee Olson notched her second of the game to give the Yellowjackets another one-goal lead at 3-2.  DeKezel and Haley Olmstead were credited with assists on the play.

With just over two minutes to go in the period Kiara DeKezel would put the icing on the cake with another Yellowjacket goal and UW-S went on to take this one 4-2 over the Saints.

Rachel Borchardt (Willow River, Minn./Willow River HS ) took the loss for the Saints making 31 saves as her record now falls to 1-2-2.

N. Waidacher's assist gives her a team leading 33 points this season on 17 goals and 16 assists while M. Waidacher's goal gives her 26 points on 10 goals and 16 assists as she sits in second on the team.

The Saints (12-7-5, 10-6-3 NCHA) will have another chance tomorrow afternoon when they travel across the bridge to Wessman Arena in Superior for a 2 p.m. game against the Yellowjackets.  Check out csssaints.com for game coverage information.
