The CSS women's hockey team cranked up the offense in a 4-2 victory over the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Ozaukee Arena.
The victory over the Falcons (7-13-3, 5-11-2 NCHA) puts the Saints in a tie for third with Lake Forest at 23 points.
Unlike last night it was the Saints getting on the board first with 3:51 left in the first period when
Monika Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftsschule KV Chur (Swiss National Team)) took advantage of a power play scoring on assists from
Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) and
Michelle Fischer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall). The Saints took this 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
CSS continued the scoring about halfway through the second period when N. Waidacher put in a goal of her own from
Jordy Klimek (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) to make it 2-0 Saints.
Just as the Saints have done many times this season, they followed up a goal with another less than a minute later.
Briana Stephens (Chicago, Ill./Hopkins HS (Minn.)) notched her second goal of the season on a
Briget Cojocar (Limerick, Saskatchewan/Lafleche HS (Melville Prairie Fire)) assist to make it 3-0 Saints, a lead they would take into the second intermission.
CSS didn't waste any time in the third as N. Waidacher scored her second of the game just 48 seconds into the period to make it 4-0 Saints. M. Waidacher was credited with an assist on the play.
At this point the Saints had scored six unanswered goals against the Falcons this weekend as they ended last night's game with two unanswered.
At the 15:12 point the Falcons attempted to spark a comeback with an empty net when Emily Heckendorf scored on assists from Sarah Cole and Maxine Blohowiak to make it 4-1 Saints.
The comeback continued a minute and a half later when Bradi Jonasson scored her second goal of the series on a power play to make it 4-2 in favor of CSS. Blohowiak earned another assist on the play.
The late goals were too little too late for the Falcons as the Saints defense held strong in the final minutes to earn a 4-2 victory.
Rachel Borchardt (Willow River, Minn./Willow River HS ) earned her first victory of the season making 27 saves and improving her record to 1-1-2.
N. Waidacher's goals now give her 17 on the season as she eclipses the 30-point mark with 31 this year. M. Waidacher remains in second with 25 points on nine goals and a team best 16 assists. Fischer and Klimek are third and fourth on the team with 22 and 17 points respectively.
