Box Score MENOMONIE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team controlled most of the play on Friday night, but fell 2-1 in overtime to the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
The first two periods of the contest went scoreless as the Saints had a 25-13 advantage in shots. CSS finally broke through one minute and 34 seconds into the third period when
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) netted his fifth of the season.
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) had the assist.
The Blue Devils (5-3-2, 2-3-0 NCHA) knotted the game up with 7:07 left in the third period when Sam Carr scored. It remained that way until the end of regulation, meaning the Saints were going to overtime for the first time this season.
In the final minute of overtime, Zach Vierling gave the Blue Devils the 2-1 victory on a tally with 53 seconds left. It was the second overtime game of the season for UW-Stout with the first ending in a tie against Marian University (Wis.) in the season opener.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) had 25 saves in the defeat for the Saints, while Nick Hopper had 38 saves in the victory for the Blue Devils.
The Saints (3-6-0, 1-4-0 NCHA) outshot the Blue Devils 39-27 with both teams going a combined 0-for-6 on the power-play.
Both teams will go again tomorrow at the Dunn County Ice Arena with the puck drop scheduled for 4 p.m. All of the action can be heard live on Saints Sports Net.
